According to Justine Wilson, Founder and Principal Stylist of Vault Interiors, the next wave of interior design trends is all about balance - blending warmth, functionality and wellbeing with thoughtful, long-term design choices. 

"After years of fast trends and visual overload, we're seeing a shift toward spaces that feel grounded, flexible and emotionally supportive," says Wilson. "Homes in 2026 will prioritise longevity, liveability and how a space makes you feel day-to-day." 

Colour with Confidence: Colour is returning in a more refined and intentional way. Expect layered neutrals warmed with earthy undertones, alongside richer accent colours inspired by nature - think clay, olive, deep teal and sun-baked terracotta. "These shades bring depth without overwhelming a space," says Wilson. "They photograph beautifully, but more importantly, they feel timeless and comforting."

Styling tips: Rather than committing to bold walls, introduce colour through cushions, throws, artwork or ceramics. Keep large furniture pieces neutral and layer colour in smaller, interchangeable accents to future-proof your space.

Eco-Conscious Design: Sustainability is no longer a 'nice to have', it's an expectation. In 2026, eco-conscious design shows up through natural materials, recycled finishes, and a preference for quality over quantity. Wilson explains, "It's about investing in pieces that age well and reducing waste through smarter choices."

Styling tips: Mix new pieces with vintage or second-hand finds, and prioritise natural materials like timber, stone and linen. One well-made piece with character will have more impact than multiple trend-driven items.

Soft Minimalism: Minimalism continues to evolve, becoming warmer and more personal. Clean lines remain, but they're softened with texture, curves and layered finishes. "This is minimalism that still feels lived-in," says Wilson. "It's calm, but never cold."

Styling tips: Edit back clutter, then add warmth through texture - think boucle cushions, wool throws or handmade ceramics. Aim for fewer items on surfaces, but make each one count.

Wellness Corners: Dedicated wellness spaces are becoming a key feature in modern homes - from quiet reading nooks to meditation corners or spa-like bathrooms. "People want homes that support mental wellbeing," Wilson notes. "Even small moments of retreat can have a big impact."

Styling tips: Create a calm corner using soft lighting, a comfortable chair, greenery and minimal accessories. Keep the palette neutral and avoid visual noise to encourage rest and reset.

Multi-Function: Finally, flexibility is essential. Homes in 2026 are designed to adapt - offices that convert to guest rooms, dining spaces that double as work zones, and furniture that works harder. "Smart, multi-functional design isn't about compromise," says Wilson. "It's about making every square metre count."

Styling tips: Choose furniture that can serve more than one purpose, such as ottomans with storage or stools that double as side tables. Use rugs and lighting to subtly zone spaces without building walls.

"The interiors of 2026 are thoughtful, warm and purposeful - homes designed not just to look good, but to truly support the way we live now," says Wilson.
