When Avocado Zinc came to Distl, their Google Ads had the bones of something good. What they needed was structure, accuracy, and a team that knew how to build on it. Four weeks after the rebuild, the Western Australian skincare brand had generated $54,891 in revenue from just $1,303 in ad spend - a 42:1 return on ad spend.

 

The Brand Behind the Results

Avocado Zinc is an Australian-made skincare range formulated in Western Australia by founder Ellen. The collection was born from a genuine gap in the market: a daily sunscreen that worked under makeup, was kind to sensitive skin, and left no white cast. The range is TGA-listed, vegan, cruelty-free, reef-friendly, and packaged in recycled tubes. It's designed for the whole family, from babies through to adults, including during pregnancy.

With a strong returning customer base already in place, Avocado Zinc partnered with Distl to reach new audiences, protect their brand in search, and drive more online sales.



 

What Wasn't Working

The account had a solid foundation, but several problems were quietly killing performance.

Competitors and stockists were bidding on Avocado Zinc's own brand name, diverting search traffic and conversions that should have been straightforward wins. Campaigns lacked the structure needed to prioritise top-performing products. Conversion tracking was inaccurate, meaning purchase data wasn't being properly reported and campaigns were optimising toward the wrong signals.

The Performance Max campaign had limited creative assets, so Google's AI had very little to work with. It served infrequently and underdelivered.


 

The Rebuild

Distl started from the ground up. Every decision was made with profitability, accuracy, and scalability in mind.

Conversion tracking was fixed first. Campaigns needed to optimise toward actual purchases  -  not secondary actions like 'add to cart'  -  so that's where the rebuild began. From there, the team introduced segmented campaigns across hero products, bundles, and competitor searches, giving much tighter control over budget allocation and performance visibility.

 

The Performance Max campaign was rebuilt entirely with fresh ad copy, multiple lifestyle and product images, and asset groups divided by product type. Giving Google's AI more to work with meant better creative-to-intent matching and more qualified traffic reaching the site.

Branded search campaigns were strengthened to shut out competitor interference and make sure Avocado Zinc dominated its own name in the results.

In four weeks, the rebuilt account delivered across every key metric:

  • 42x ROAS from Google Ads
  • $54,891 in revenue from $1,303 in ad spend
  • 500+ new customer orders
  • 3x the eCommerce conversion rate average

Bundle and brand campaigns drove the majority of sales. Performance Max reached new customers at scale and contributed significantly to total revenue. Hero product ads maintained brand visibility, and competitor campaigns protected the brand even without generating direct sales.
