Australia's Battery Rebate Is Changing — And Homeowners Need to Act Wisely

Announcement posted by Solar Guide Australia 12 Mar 2026

With the May 2026 rebate cut approaching fast and installers booking out, expert advice urges homeowners to prioritise trust over urgency.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

AUSTRALIA - 12 March 2026 - The Solar Guide Australia is warning homeowners that changes to the Federal Government's Cheaper Home Batteries Program, taking effect 1 May 2026, are creating a surge in demand — and a rise in opportunistic sales tactics that could cost Australians thousands.

The government introduced the Cheaper Home Batteries Program in July 2025, offering households approximately 30% off the upfront cost of a new solar battery. Following stronger-than-expected uptake, the scheme's rebate structure will be revised from May to ensure the $2.3 billion programme remains viable through to its 2030 end date. Under the new rules, rebates will step down every six months rather than annually, and larger battery systems above 28 kWh will receive significantly reduced support per kilowatt hour.

With the deadline now weeks away, many accredited installers across Australia are already booked out. The urgency has created fertile ground for high-pressure sales tactics — a pattern well known in the solar industry.

"The May cut-off is real, but it's being used by some operators to pressure homeowners into rushed decisions," said Reefe Eleftheriou, founder of The Solar Guide Australia and award-winning solar installer with over a decade of experience. "That's exactly the environment where cowboys thrive."

Eleftheriou cautions that for most Australian households, the calculus is straightforward. "If you need a standard home battery — typically under 28 kWh — the honest advice is to wait until after May, choose a trusted local installer, and avoid the chaos," he said. "The rebate reduction after May will mostly impact people needing a very large battery. For everyone else, patience and due diligence will serve you better than chasing the deadline."
