Dinisha Merwood is living proof that extra support and learning as a child can make or break a person's life.
"My mother fought to help me as a child and now I am using that determination to help my children and the lives of other families in my community," Ms Merwood said.
Dinisha Merwood, a Malaysian born mother of two, has opened Success Tutoring Lower Hutt with her husband Philip, creating a centre focused on rebuilding confidence in children through structured, back to basics learning.
Her story starts long before New Zealand. It begins with a little girl, a missed year of schooling and a mother who refused to give up.
"I skipped a grade when I was nine," Ms Merwood said.
"My mum begged a well known tuition teacher to take me on, but she refused because I had missed a year of education. The impact on me was extreme, I fell very behind in my learning.
What happened next has stayed with her for life.
"I still remember my mum fighting for me," she said.
"She would not accept no. She believed in me even when others did not."
Eventually, a teacher from her school stepped in to help. With tutoring and support, everything changed.
"That year I came first in my class," Ms Merwood said.
"That moment built my confidence. It showed me what is possible when someone believes in you."
From struggle to strength, and a lifetime of impact
Tutoring did not just help her catch up, it shaped her future.
As a student, Dinisha balanced academics with sport and extracurricular activities, representing her school in athletics, badminton and chess. However, with training often taking place during school hours, she frequently fell behind in class.
"Tutoring allowed me to keep up," she said.
"It meant I could pursue everything I loved without falling behind academically."
That balance ultimately helped her secure scholarships and complete her Chartered Accountancy studies, setting her on a successful professional path. However, the lesson that stayed with her was not just academic.
"It was about confidence," she said.
"When you know someone believes in you, it changes how you see yourself."
A mother's promise becomes a community mission
Today, Ms Merwood's own mother is in New Zealand, supporting her as she builds the business, just as she did years ago.
"She always said it was for the betterment of my future," Ms Merwood said.
"She is here again now, helping us with our children while we build this centre. I could not do this without her."
Now a parent herself, Ms Merwood is determined to pass that same belief on to other families.
"When you become a parent, everything shifts," she said.
"You start to see how fragile confidence can be and how important it is to get the right support early."
The idea for the centre came when she and her husband struggled to find the kind of tutoring they wanted for their own daughter.
"We did not want more screens," Mr Merwood said.
"We wanted real learning, writing, thinking, solving problems properly. We realised other families were looking for the same thing."
Rebuilding confidence, one child at a time
Success Tutoring Lower Hutt, which opened on 2 March 2026, offers structured small group tutoring in English and mathematics, with personalised learning plans designed to meet each child where they are. For Ms Merwood, the real goal goes far beyond grades.
"What we care about most is confidence," she said.
"When a child finally understands something that once felt impossible, you can see the shift instantly. They sit up straighter, they engage, they start to believe in themselves again."
She said one of the most confronting realities is how many children are quietly struggling.
"We meet children who have reached intermediate school and still cannot read confidently," she said.
"That is heartbreaking, because it is not about intelligence, it is about support."
A growing movement in Lower Hutt
Since opening, the centre has already attracted strong interest from families across Lower Hutt and the wider Hutt Valley, many of whom are seeking structured support and a more traditional approach to learning.
For the Merwood family, the centre represents more than a business. It is a long term commitment to their community.
"In Lower Hutt we are surrounded by families who care deeply about their children," Ms Merwood said.
"If we can help even a handful of those children rebuild confidence and realise their potential, that is everything to us."
Her message is simple, but powerful.
"Every child deserves someone who believes in them because sometimes that belief is the turning point."
