Australia’s hidden house fortunes: gold, cash and jewellery being unknowingly thrown away during clear-outs
Announcement posted by Invigorate PR 20 Mar 2026
Property clearance expert, Bob Morton, is warning that the problem of jewellery, money and other valuables being accidentally thrown away during house clear-outs is widespread. Valuables are routinely hidden and forgotten in homes of older Australians.
As families across Australia rush to clear out homes following a death or move into aged care, a disturbing trend is emerging, hidden fortunes are being missed, and in some cases, thrown straight into the bin.
Morton, the cofounder of The Property Clearance Company, said his team is uncovering thousands and sometimes tens of thousands, of dollars in gold, jewellery, cash and collectibles concealed inside ordinary suburban homes and it is not rare.
"It is incredibly common," Morton said.
"We are finding valuables in homes all the time. This is not a one-off or unusual situation. It happens far more than people realise."
From envelopes of cash hidden in camera cases to jewellery concealed in a pouch on a coat hanger and gold in a hidden safe, Morton said entire life savings can sit undetected for decades.
"We have found money taped under a cabinet, in a vase, hidden in tins, even stitched into fabric," he said.
"These are deliberate hiding spots, and they are very easy to miss if you do not know what you are looking for."
A generation that hid wealth, not trusted banks
Morton said many older Australians grew up in an era where distrust of banks and institutions was common, leading them to keep wealth physically close and out of sight.
"This was a generation that did not always trust the system," he said.
"They hid cash, gold and valuables at home because it felt safer to them."
Over time, those hiding places are forgotten, undocumented and never passed on.
"In many cases, even the person who hid the items can no longer remember where they put them," Morton said.
"By the time families are clearing the home, the knowledge is gone."
Rushed clear-outs are costing families thousands
Morton said the biggest losses happen when homes are cleared quickly, often under emotional pressure, time constraints or the urgency of selling a property.
"When families are grieving or trying to move quickly, everything looks like clutter," he said.
"Skip bins get filled, donation piles grow and entire homes are emptied without a proper search. That is when money is lost. People across Australia could be selling homes that contain valuables that their loved ones have hidden.
"The winners are the people who buy the homes and discover the valuables."
He said his team regularly steps in just in time.
"We have uncovered boxes with thousands of dollars' worth of jewellery, envelopes of cash, rare coins and valuable heirlooms that could easily have been thrown away," he said.
"In some cases, it has been sitting there untouched for 30 or 40 years."
The hidden hotspots inside every home
Morton said there are consistent patterns in where valuables are concealed and they are often in places families would never think to check.
"Unless you are actively looking, you will miss them."
He stressed that these are not random discoveries.
"This was intentional behaviour," Morton said.
"People went to great lengths to hide what they had."
More than money, what families are losing
While the financial loss can be significant, Morton said the emotional cost is often even greater.
"These are not just items, they are memories, history and legacy," he said.
"Jewellery, medals, keepsakes, once they are gone, they are gone."
The warning, do not assume anything is worthless
Morton's message to families is simple and urgent, slow down and never assume something has no value.
"The biggest mistake we see is people rushing and making assumptions," he said.
"What looks like junk could be worth thousands."
He said bringing in experienced professionals can make a critical difference.
"We do not just clear homes, we uncover what has been hidden, preserve the legacy of the occupant and more often than not, there is something there," he said.
