MEDIA RELEASE: 40 years of supporting older people in NSW – with demand still growing

Announcement posted by Seniors Rights Service 02 Apr 2026

Seniors Rights Service marks 40 years of championing the rights of older people

This year Seniors Rights Service celebrates forty years of championing the rights and voices of older people in NSW. Established in 1986 we are proud of what we have achieved and thankful to the dedicated team that has been part of our journey.

Our primary focus is supporting older people. Last financial year alone Seniors Rights Service took on over 2,300 advocacy cases, 6,600 legal enquiries and over 10,000 requests for information. We have seen a significant increase in demand for our advocacy and legal services compared to previous years. This tells us that older people need our support more than ever as well as support from Government to navigate their aged care journey.

Quote from Shannon Wright, CEO

"When I look back at our history, what stands out to me is that we've spoken up. We've provided leadership on the issues that matter to older people and we've done it by working closely with our partners and other community organisations.
We know our landscape is changing. Australia's population is ageing. The cost of living is rising and this means the demand for our services isn't going anywhere and will continue to grow for years to come.

What gives me real confidence is our team. Every day they are on the phone, out in communities having conversations and making connections with older people who need support.

As we move forward, we'll keep evolving and responding to new challenges always keeping the rights and dignity of older people at the heart of what we do."

We give thanks to our funding partners, the Older Person's Advocacy Network, NSW Department of Communities and Justice, NSW Fair Trading and Legal Aid NSW. It's this funding that allows us to provide vital services to older people.

As we move into the next stage of our journey we'll continue to focus on delivering aged care advocacy services and legal services to older people across NSW as well as rights based education to community groups and organisations right across the state.
Seniors Rights Service continues to look for new ways to uphold and support the rights of older people across NSW and provide best practice rights based services. Through our networks and memberships we are continuing to advocate to the Government on the rights of older people. We also extend our commitment to human rights beyond NSW to Federal Government and the United Nations in the hope for the development of a new human rights convention.

We look forward to many more years of service.
