Stand up for our right to access and use cash in our local communities

Australia's annual pro-cash protest "Cash-Out Day" is tomorrow, Tuesday 28th April.

More than two million Aussies are expected to make a cash withdrawal from an ATM, bank branch or EFTPOS retailer tomorrow to show support for our right to access and use cash in our local community.

The latest RBA Consumer Payments Survey published last week, shows Australians are using more cash than they were three years ago.

19 per cent of in-person payments were made using cash in 2025, up from 16 per cent in 2022, according to the RBA's CPS.

75 per cent of Australians carry cash and the average amount is $65.

But, the RBA says, banks are continuing to restrict access to cash by closing ATMs and branches.

There's now more Bank@Post outlets than all bank branches combined. There are four times as many independent ATMs as bank-owned ATMs.

But demand for ATM cash withdrawals has been trending up for almost four years.

Some big retail banks don't have any ATMs (eg: Macquarie, ING) and those banks retaining a branded fleet of ATMs mostly continue to offload or close them. The number of bank branches continues to fall.

Both consumers and retailers are finding using cash more difficult now than three years ago. The RBA says:

"Maintaining reasonable access to withdrawal and deposit services is important for Australians who want or need to use cash, but the 2025 results suggest that accessing cash has become less convenient than it was three years ago.

" ... perceptions of convenience have declined since 2022, particularly for withdrawal services." (RBA 2026)

The situation is also bad for business..

" ... more than two-thirds of merchants that accept cash reported challenges doing so, including finding it difficult to access places to deposit and withdraw cash, running out of change and having higher withdrawal and deposit fees."

The RBA concludes with a fairly clear warning:

"Half of Australians use cash in a typical week and one-third would face hardship or major inconvenience if cash were to become difficult to access."

Enough is enough. Help us stand up for our right to access and use cash.
