Announcement posted by Pet Insurance Australia 11 May 2026
As temperatures begin to drop across Australia, pet owners are being urged to pay closer attention to their senior pets, as colder weather often worsens underlying health conditions such as arthritis, mobility issues, and cognitive decline.
According to Pet Insurance Australia spokesperson Nadia Crighton, winter can be particularly challenging for older dogs and cats, with subtle signs often overlooked until conditions become more serious.
"Just like humans, our pets can feel the cold more as they age," says Crighton. "Winter can exacerbate joint stiffness, reduce mobility and impact overall wellbeing, particularly for senior pets already managing chronic conditions."
PetSure claims data reveals osteoarthritis was the most commonly claimed condition for insured senior dogs aged 8+ in 2024, with the highest amount claimed for treatment reaching $21,936 over a 12-month period.*
"Senior dogs commonly experience osteoarthritis, skin allergies and mass lesions/lumps," Crighton says. "For senior cats, the most commonly claimed conditions include gastrointestinal disease, urinary tract disorders and dental disease."
The highest amount claimed for skin infections/allergies in senior dogs reached $15,465, while urinary tract disorders in senior cats reached up to $22,945.*
Common Health Conditions in Senior Dogs (8+)
- Osteoarthritis
- Skin infections and allergies
- Mass lesions and lumps
Common Health Conditions in Senior Cats (8+)
- Gastrointestinal disease
- Urinary tract disorders
- Dental disease
"Many pet owners assume slowing down is simply part of ageing, but changes in behaviour, mobility or even personality can indicate an underlying medical issue," says Crighton.
The Often-Missed Signs of Cognitive Decline
Pet owners are also being warned to watch for signs of Canine Cognitive Dysfunction (CCD), often described as the canine equivalent of dementia.
"Cognitive decline in pets can be incredibly subtle in the early stages," says Crighton. "We often hear owners say their dog is becoming confused, staring at walls, pacing at night, forgetting routines, or seeming withdrawn. These behaviours are not simply 'old age' and should never be ignored."
Signs of CCD can include:
- Increased anxiety or confusion
- Pacing or restlessness at night
- Forgetting house training
- Reduced interaction with family members
- Changes in sleep patterns
- Getting lost or stuck in familiar places
- Vocalising more frequently
"The important thing for pet owners to know is that there are management and treatment options available," Crighton explains. "Early intervention, veterinary support, environmental enrichment, nutrition and medication can all play a role in improving quality of life for ageing pets."
She says regular veterinary checks become increasingly important as pets age, particularly during colder months when conditions may worsen.
"Pets are incredibly good at masking pain and discomfort," says Crighton. "Routine vet visits allow owners to catch conditions earlier, potentially improving outcomes and helping pets remain comfortable for longer."
Nutrition Plays a Key Role in Healthy Ageing
According to canine nutrition specialist Rachael Tricarico, from Houndztooth, targeted nutrition can significantly support ageing pets through winter.
As pets age, it's important to support their joints, mobility, digestion and overall well-being, especially during the colder winter months when stiffness and arthritis symptoms can become more noticeable," Tricarico says. "I recommend focusing on a balanced, nutrient-rich diet combined with targeted support such as omega fatty acids, joint-support supplements, probiotics and high-quality protein to help maintain muscle mass and mobility.
She also recommends keeping senior pets warm, active with gentle daily exercise, and at a healthy weight, which significantly improves their comfort and quality of life.
Ingredients such as omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants and New Zealand green-lipped mussel can help support inflammation, joint health and overall comfort in ageing pets.
"Providing optimal nutrition for senior pets is incredibly important because nutrition directly impacts how well pets age and their overall quality of life," she says.
Practical Winter Tips for Senior Pets
Pet owners can help support older pets during winter by:
- Providing warm bedding away from drafts
- Using ramps or steps to reduce strain on joints
- Maintaining gentle daily exercise
- Monitoring weight closely
- Keeping up with regular vet checks
- Reviewing diet and nutritional support
- Watching for behavioural or cognitive changes
"Small changes can make a significant difference to a senior pet's comfort and wellbeing," Crighton says. "Owning a precious 11-year-old Dobermann myself, I know first-hand how important it is to keep your beloved pet comfortable, well-supported nutritionally, and surrounded by love as they navigate their senior years. The earlier pet owners notice changes and seek support, the better the outcome can often be."
