Imagine a world without cancer… Conquering Breast Cancer is a compelling social impact film that inspires us to do just that. Asking: Can Australia rise to the challenge of conquering breast cancer?
In a country where breast cancer is the second most commonly diagnosed cancer and the most common cancer among women. Breast cancer is often seen as a success story, with 5-year survival rates sitting at over 90%. But until there's a cure, breast cancer is far from 'solved'.
Presenter Sue Collins takes the audience beyond these statistics to discover how remarkable Australians are changing the world. Weaving together powerful survivor stories, including Olympian Raelene Boyle AM, MBE, basketball champion Paul Maley, and podcaster Dr Charlotte Tottman. Supported by insights from leading medical experts, including Prof Bruce Mann, Prof Kelly-Anne Phillips and A/Prof Christine Chaffer, that highlight the importance of prevention, early detection, treatment, research, clinical trials and the psychological impact this disease has on survivors. Each story challenges complacency and encourages us to come together and strive for this health moonshot.
Conquering Breast Cancer is the third instalment of the Conquering Cancer documentary series, the film also features activists Pratika Lal (Founder, Treasure Chest Charity) and Sarah Powell (Inherited Cancers Australia) and highlights both the progress made and the work still to be done to find a cure and ensure that no more Australians lose their lives to this disease.
Produced by multi-award-winning filmmakers and impact film pioneers Mike Hill and Sue Collins, Conquering Breast Cancer boasts a treasure trove of incredible stories captured across Australia, from cities to regional centres.
This cinematic film is a powerful call to action for an unprecedented push in prevention, greater access to life-saving care, and crucial investments in cutting-edge treatments, targeted early detection programs, and research.
Dr Cleola Anderiesz, CEO of the National Breast Cancer Foundation, said, "The film highlights both the incredible progress we've made and the ambition required to go further, brought to life through powerful personal stories of those impacted by breast cancer. Conquering breast cancer will rely on continued investment in world-class breast cancer research - transforming breakthroughs into a future with Zero Deaths from breast cancer."
Lyn Swinburne AO, Founder of Breast Cancer Network Australia, said, "Conquering Breast Cancer is a must-see for all Australians. You will be informed by the science and at the same time moved and inspired by the personal stories".
Kensi Naicker, General Manager, Hologic Australia & New Zealand, said, "As the presenting partner of Conquering Breast Cancer, Hologic is proud to champion equitable access to care—because every woman deserves the chance for early detection, better outcomes, and a future beyond breast cancer. ABOUT BREAST CANCER
Breast cancer is the second most commonly diagnosed cancer in Australia after prostate cancer, and the most common cancer among women.
The Grim Reality: Every day, 56 people in Australia are diagnosed with breast cancer. That equates to over 20,000 people in Australia being diagnosed with breast cancer each year. 1 in 7 women and around 1 in 600 men are diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. Every year, over 3,300 people in Australia (including 40 men) will die from breast cancer. That's nine people dying from the disease every day. Approximately one woman under the age of 40 is expected to die each week from breast cancer. In the last 10 years, breast cancer diagnoses have increased by around 15%. (Source: National Breast Cancer Foundation)
Age Range: The majority of breast cancer cases, about 80%, occur in women over the age of 50. But breast cancer still occurs in young women. Around 1,000 young women aged under 40 are diagnosed with breast cancer each year, equivalent to about three young women each day. (Source: National Breast Cancer Foundation)
The Health Burden: There are over 160,000 people living in Australia who were diagnosed with breast cancer in the last ten years. Breast cancer significantly impacts quality of life and work productivity. Over a ten-year period from 2022 to 2031, it is predicted that breast cancer will result in the loss of 4,286 years of life lived and 15,597 QALYs. It is also predicted that 16,403 PALYs will be lost, equating to AU$3.26 billion in lost GDP.
