‘ROWED LESS TRAVELLED’ MENTAL HEALTH ADVOCATES SET TO RAISE $1MILLION FOR BLACK DOG INSTITUTE

 

Sydney expedition team Rowed Less Travelled (RLT) is preparing for two of the world's toughest ocean endurance events as part of a major fundraising push for the Black Dog Institute, aiming to lift their total contribution to $1 million for mental health research.

The team, led by Cameron Mostyn and Martin Fletcher, has already raised more than $650,000 through a series of extreme challenges to support evidence‑based mental health science.

Says Martin, "It's easy sometimes to forget that mental health doesn't just exist at the extreme. It's also about the millions of Australians living in the middle lane. They're functioning, going to work, raising families and getting on with life, but at the same time are carrying stress, anxiety, burnout or a lack of purpose that never quite becomes serious enough to force change. 

"That's why we support the Black Dog Institute. Their work isn't just about helping people at the point of crisis. It's about understanding mental health across the entire spectrum and giving people the tools to live healthier, more fulfilling lives."

In October, RLT will compete in the iconic Moloka'i Hoe World Championship, one of the most demanding outrigger canoe races on the planet. This will lead directly into a world‑record attempt in November: a 36‑hour continuous paddle along the NSW coastline.

Since their first outrigger session in September 2025, the team has already won the men's open division at both the NSW State Titles and Australian National Titles.

Their previous endurance feats include:

• Atlantic Row — Unsupported crossing of the Atlantic Ocean. 4,800 km in 35 days setting an Australian Record
• Marathon des Sables — Ultra Run 252 km across the Sahara (6 Marathons in 5 days)
• Rottnest Channel Swim — 21 km open‑ocean crossing

The full journey—including training, Moloka'i Hoe, and the world‑record attempt—will be filmed for a documentary with Paddle Life TV.
