Real human bodies wow Sydneysiders

The AMAZING HUMAN BODY EXHIBITION, a spectacular journey of the human body featuring authentic human specimens that have been preserved through a special technique known as plastination invented by Dr. Gunther von Hagens to educate people about their body in health and disease, continues to wow visitors at Sydney SuperDome.
The success of this exhibition is due to the fact that real human bodies show the details of disease, physiology and anatomy in a way that cannot be shown with models, textbooks or photos. They allow us to understand how each body has it own unique features, even on the inside, said Anna-Greta Pearl, spokesperson for the AMAZING HUMAN BODY EXHIBITION.
The publics response has been very positive with interest and curiosity continuing to spread across the country. The exhibition is now attracting a broader audience base, including a large group with a desire to learn more about the exhibition and the human body.
Cementing this positive response was the Australian Science Communicators NSW holding a private evening function hosted by Dr Karl Kruszelnicki and Cris dos Remedios, Professor of Anatomy and Biophysics at the University of Sydney on 7 March.
This exhibition has found a way around the legal restrictions that, up till now, have prevented anatomy departments in Australia from displaying the human body to the public. I applaud it, said Cris dos Remedios.
The exhibition demystifies the human body. It displays those human parts that ordinary people can only guess about. And people look for quite different things. Some, like dancers, are really interested in the muscle they use, others wonder about the spinal cord and spinal injuries, or about bones they may have broken.
In this exhibition people can wander over to the parts they are fascinated by or need to experience. People do not need to feel self-conscious or embarrassed, and there is no need to rush. I think it has appeal for young and old.
The AMAZING HUMAN BODY EXHIBITION has the support of the NSW Department of Education and Training, the Childrens Medical Research Institute, the Heart Foundation of Australia (NSW) along with Australian communications company, 3DClinic Pty Ltd and global company The Espro Acoustiguide Group.
The exhibition is divided into several areas highlighting the different systems of the body - locomotion, digestive, respiratory, cardiovascular, nervous and urogential (kidneys, bladder, genital). In addition, there are a series of slices and casts to help illustrate the exact position of the organs inside the body.
The human body is made up of various systems, organs and structures that interact in a coordinated way to fulfill the functions that enable life to exist. The poses of the 18 full body specimens have been carefully thought out and serve educational aims. Each unique authentic specimen is posed to illustrate different physiological features. They are chosen to highlight specific anatomical features and allow the visitor to relate the plastinate to his or her own body. For instance, the cyclist illustrates the use of muscle systems while riding a bicycle.
With relevance to Human Society and Its Environment for year 6 and Personal Development, Health and Physical Education for years 7-10, both public and private school groups are visiting the exhibition on a weekly basis and getting an introductory presentation on anatomy and physiology.
It's great! Its interesting how our body parts look like and work," a young girl wrote. It teaches us about the effects of smoking and also how we should take care of our body because it is so fragile, said a male 16 year old student.
A male nurse observed: "Excellent exhibition. Such a wonderful learning tool and eye opener! As a nurse the detailed exhibits are great to see, in an otherwise closed body system, this material is a bonus.
A librarian wrote: This exhibition was very fascinating. It shows that you should take better care of your body so that it takes care of you. It also made me not want to smoke ever! and a teacher commented: Incredible - very educational - awe inspiring! What a great way to learn about our amazing bodies.
The AMAZING HUMAN BODY EXHIBITION is a captivating display of our body that is amazing, astounding, spectacular and confronting! The exhibition is open from 10am to 5pm weekdays and 10am to 6pm on weekends. Tickets can be purchased through Ticketek (www.ticketek.com) or at the door.
However, you better hurry, as the Sydney exhibition closes on Sunday 2 April after which the exhibition begins its Australian/New Zealand tour.
