A real estate boss with a portfolio of almost 400 properties who is also the founder Australia's largest buyer's agency B.Invested, Nathan Birch, has called out Treasurer Jim Chalmers who has basked in what he says is a record increase in new businesses arising since the budget announcement.

Reports have outlined that a total of 40,040 new businesses were started in July, and 43, 393 in June 2026.

According to Birch, Chalmers is seemingly concealing the fact that this uptick was predominantly from those starting their own SMSFs before yesterday's deadline to be eligible to buy property via that mechanism.

'I've never been as busy as I have been in the last month, with the rush of clients finalising their SMSFs. It is not a booming economic outcome as Chalmers has purported, whereby a record number of new businesses have started up,' Birch said.

'A huge chunk of that spike came from everyday Australians setting up companies as part of establishing an SMSF, just so they can buy property through their super fund.'

'Add in the number of people migrating here and starting businesses to secure visa sponsorship through job creation, and the picture looks very different to the "booming economy" headline.'

Birch concludes that the self-congratulation within the media by Chalmers is gaslighting at its finest.

Chalmers maintains that record new business registrations were not just a new trend, but that business creation had been growing for several years under Labor, a suggestion Birch firmly disputes.
