Meet the Queensland fitter and turner mine worker making reggae after knock-off

Announcement posted by Invigorate PR 13 Aug 2026

From the mines of regional Queensland to music streaming platforms across the globe, independent artist Gabriel GS Reggae is proving that Australia's next music success story may not come from a record label, but from the end of a long shift.

While many Australians finish work and head home to relax, Mackay mine worker Gabriel heads to the recording studio.

This month, the qualified diesel mechanic, maintenance planner and independent recording artist released his highly anticipated second single, 'U Mek Mi (You Make Me)', a heartfelt reggae track that could become the breakthrough moment in a remarkable journey balancing one of Australia's toughest industries with an ambitious international music career.

Gabriel believes his greatest strength as an artist is that his story mirrors the reality of thousands of hardworking Australians.

"I'm not someone who had a record label behind me or millions of dollars to launch a music career," Gabriel said.

"I work full-time, often long hours, and every song has been written, recorded and promoted around my work commitments.

"I know what it's feels like to chase a dream while paying bills, working hard and trying to build something meaningful. That's the story behind my music."

Originally from Zambia, Gabriel moved to Australia to build a better future, bringing with him a lifelong passion for reggae music and a determination to create songs that inspire hope, resilience and unity.

Rather than waiting for an opportunity, he created one.

Working independently from regional Queensland, Gabriel has built his music brand from the ground up, releasing professionally produced music and growing an international audience across Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube and other major streaming platforms.

He believes the release of 'U Mek Mi' represents far more than another single.

"It's another step towards proving that you don't have to give up your dreams because life gets busy," he said.

"There are so many people working in mines, factories, hospitals, construction sites and offices who have talents they're passionate about.

"I want them to see that it's possible to keep building those dreams, even if the journey takes longer."

Unlike many emerging artists who rely on reality television or major record labels, Gabriel has personally funded and developed his music career while learning every aspect of the industry, from songwriting and recording through to music videos, branding and promotion.

His authentic approach is increasingly resonating with audiences searching for genuine stories rather than manufactured celebrity.

Music industry observers say audiences are becoming more interested in artists with authentic life experiences, and Gabriel believes that is helping independent musicians compete on the global stage.

"People connect with honesty. They don't just listen to a song anymore. They want to know who you are and what you've overcome," Gabriel said.

"My journey has shaped every lyric I write. My music including every note, has been created to capture my experience, history and hope for the future."

His latest release blends traditional reggae rhythms with uplifting storytelling and positive messages, continuing his mission to produce music that encourages, inspires and brings people together regardless of culture or background.

Looking ahead, Gabriel's ambitions stretch far beyond one successful single.

His vision is to establish his brand Gabriel GS Reggae as an internationally recognised reggae name through consistent music releases, festival performances, global collaborations and worldwide touring.

For now, however, he remains focused on balancing life underground with life on stage.

"Every shift I work reminds me why I'm doing this," he said.

"I'm building something for the future.

"If my story encourages just one person to keep believing in themselves and never stop chasing their passion, then every late night in the studio and every early morning at work has been worth it."

'U Mek Mi (You Make Me)' will be released globally on all major streaming platforms on 7 August 2026.
