Stage 3 of Gold Coast Light Rail enters passenger service

  • The third stage of the iconic Gold Coast Light Rail network has commenced passenger service extending the network by 6.7km with an additional eight stations, on one of Australia's busiest light rail routes.
  • Alstom has delivered and integrated core rail systems for the new alignment that include state-of-the-art digital signalling and telecommunications solutions. This enables seamless operations across the expanded network while enhancing operational reliability, resilience and safety.
  • Five Flexity II trams manufactured, tested and commissioned by Alstom support the route extension, bringing the total number Alstom-maintained Flexity II trams in operation on the network to 23.

14 August 2026 - Alstom, global leader in smart and sustainable mobility, has successfully delivered the design, supply, installation and testing and commissioning of telecommunications, signalling and control systems that has enabled passenger service for the opening of the third stage of the Gold Coast Light Rail. These solutions connect to an enhanced control system deployed within the upgraded Operational Control Centre (OCC) now supported by a new Disaster Recovery Centre (DRC).

The stage 3 opening adds 6.7km of track to increase the total network length to 27km enabling travel between Helensvale through to Burleigh Heads opening the southern section of the Gold Coast to light rail services. Eight additional stations have opened as part of the third stage, bringing total network stations to 27. In total, 23 trams are in operation on the network, developed and built in Alstom's site in Vienna, Austria, with fleet maintenance delivered by Alstom on the Gold Coast.

As a long-term partner to GoldlinQ, delivery consortium for Gold Coast Light Rail, Alstom has delivered the entire light rail fleet and key rail systems to support the network alignment. As the fleet maintainer, Alstom have consistently delivered a near perfect level of availability for the fleet, with each tram travelling more than 100,000km every year.

As one of Australia's busiest light rail routes, carrying millions of passengers and tourists along the iconic Gold Coast beaches, the opening of the third stage brings to an end the current network extension.

A subcontractor to the GoldlinQ consortium, Alstom has delivered a tailored turnkey system meeting the Queensland Government goal of developing a rapid light rail transit network for the Gold Coast which has been funded by investments from the Australian, Queensland and local Governments.
