Monthly Food Ministry in Footscray Marks Four Months of Operation

FOOTSCRAY, VIC — A vital monthly food ministry operating in Footscray, in Melbourne's western suburbs, has been preparing and hand-delivering hot meals to people experiencing hardship since May, with dedicated support from HWPL youth volunteers.

Demonstrating an ongoing commitment to community care, HWPL youth volunteers participate in this initiative every single month, with the upcoming service scheduled to take place on August 13th.

The program is organised by St John's, a local charity, alongside ARK-VIC, which runs youth empowerment programs across Victoria. HWPL contributes a consistent, reliable group of young volunteers who assist with meal preparation and join the delivery run during each monthly session. Across the collaborating organisations, 30 to 40 volunteers cycle through the roster.

Volunteers cook in a church hall kitchen, preparing hot dishes of rice, meat, and vegetables in generous portions. Meals are then packed and distributed directly—partly on foot through Footscray's streets and partly by vehicle to locations where people in need are known to gather. Delivering meals by hand removes the barriers of a fixed collection point, where recipients must know the service exists, travel to it, and queue.

The initiative directly responds to rising food insecurity in Melbourne's west. Increases in rent and grocery costs have placed immense pressure on households already close to financial strain, causing the demand for food relief to grow accordingly.

Beyond providing immediate relief, the program functions as a practical skills and mentorship opportunity. Younger volunteers, many with no prior experience cooking at scale, work alongside experienced participants in the kitchen and take active part in distribution. Volunteers consistently report both the heartfelt gratitude of those receiving meals and the deep personal value they find in the work.

Now four months into operation, local residents have begun to recognise the monthly delivery and have expressed appreciation for the unwavering consistency shown by HWPL and its partners.

"This HWPL Crew are really special, aren't they? I cannot believe how much they pour into the community; we just had a program in Melton last week, and they showed up to support the organisations and school. Absolutely amazing group. It was such a pleasure seeing them in Footscray."

The Reverend of the church, who has watched the program take shape since its early sessions, expressed admiration for how smoothly the initiative has run:

"I cannot believe how well this program is working considering it being so new and very little advertising is needed. I am so happy and excited for what is happening here."
