Billions of viewers around the world will be relying on Unisys technology and services to keep track of the 48 games over 44 days in 11 venues around Australia during the Rugby World Cup 2003.
Unisys Australia today announced it has been named official supplier IT services to Rugby World Cup 2003 and will provide systems integration services, infrastructure management and outsourcing as well as enterprise server technology.
"For seven weeks the Rugby World Cup will be one of the largest technology clients in Australia," said Andrew Barkla, Vice President, General Manager, Unisys Asia Pacific. "There is no allowance for dropped passes as spectators, commentators, journalists, fans and followers need immediate, accurate tournament information.
"The Unisys contribution to the success of the Rugby World Cup will be highly visible, with the clear business objectives and accountability that all organisations now demand from their technology partners," he said.
Unisys will build and manage the equipment and services to collect game results and statistics, supply real-time information to international
broadcasters and media and distribute tournament data through terminals at media centres across 11 venues around Australia, showcasing Unisys ES/7000 technology, and systems integration and managed services expertise.
Mike Miller, Managing Director Rugby World Cup Limited said, "Unisys has been on board with RWC since 1991 and we are delighted to continue working with the company in Australia as the official supplier IT services. We look forward to the continuation of a strong and successful relationship."
The 140 strong Unisys RWC team has begun development and installation of the tailored programs and specialised networking infrastructure. These underwent stringent testing at the rugby Test matches in June where Australia took on Wales and then England.
The Rugby World Cup 2003 information system will be hosted from a Unisys data centre, which also runs many technology projects for major corporate and government clients. Security of networks and data is being maintained to ensure the smooth operation of the championship this is truly 'mission-critical'.
"Unisys will build on the knowledge and skills gained during the last three Rugby World Cup tournaments to demonstrate Australian leadership to the rest of the world and affirm the new, dynamic Unisys," said Barkla.
"We are focussed on meeting the deadlines, delivering the results and operating live for the duration of the game there is no other option and there is no room for error. Unisys delivers outcomes on that basis every day with our customers and now with Rugby World Cup 2003," he said.
Unisys will also manage rugby's definitive database of information including statistics, scores and player profiles dating back to the first Internationals in 1881.
The Rugby World Cup 2003 kicks off on 10 October 2003, with the world's 20 best rugby nations competing. The tournament runs for 44 days around Australia, matches will be played in six capital cities and four major regional centres across the country from Sydney to Perth and as far reaching as Launceston to Townsville.
This year's Rugby World Cup is the largest sporting event in Australia since the 2000 Olympics and the biggest sporting event in the world in 2003. Unisys has been part of the Rugby World Cup as the official supplier IT services since 1991 and will draw on this major tournament experience in 2003.
As part of this significant involvement with Rugby World Cup, the company has announced champion winger Joe Roff as the Unisys Rugby World Cup 2003 ambassador. Since making his test debut in 1995, Roff has become one of Australian rugby's favourite players. He played 58 consecutive matches with the Wallabies and is on the list of top five, all-time leading try-scorers.
