Netsolutions and Victoria University Awarded State Government Funding as part of the ICT Skills University Scholarships Program

Melbourne, 12th October 2009: Netsolutions today announced that it has partnered with Victoria University to develop new security management technologies through an industry based learning program for ICT students.

As part of the Victorian Government’s ICT Skills University Scholarships Program, ICT students are given the opportunity to gain ‘hands on’ experience through work placements with industry partners.

The program is a partnership between the Victorian Government, Victoria’s universities and Victorian ICT companies, to fund new industry based tertiary scholarships until December 2010.

The aim of the project is to give participating students an opportunity to gain valuable hands-on professional skills, improve communication and interpersonal skills and ultimately enhance the student’s employability.

Victoria University was selected to benefit from the $20,000 project grants to partner with industry as part of the ICT Skills University Scholarships Program. Final year ICT students were encouraged to apply for the program and two have been chosen to participate.

“The ICT skills program, funded by the Victorian Government, is a fantastic opportunity for students to take part in a work placement as part of their course and learn from IT professionals. Netsolutions has an excellent reputation in the industry as one of the leading providers of IT infrastructure and we are delighted that they have decided to participate in the program,” said Dr. Hao Shi, Associate Professor, School of Engineering and Science, VictoriaUniversity.

Netsolutions was founded in Melbourne in 1995 and specialises in providing technical and professional services to Juniper Networks and IBM customers. Customers include Australia Post, Village Roadshow, Parks Victoria, Catholic Education Office, Deakin & AdelaideUniversities, Lockheed Martin and BUPA Health.

“We are looking forward to working with VictoriaUniversity to drive service and product innovation through fresh and talented skill-sets. In return, the students gain practical experience and contacts within our industry” said Erin Harte, General Manager, Netsolutions.

Netsolutions will offer the total of two 12 week placements to two students, who will work on a new integrated security management platform under development at Netsolutions’ new Port Melbourne Research and Development Centre.

Outside the scheduled full time placements, students will be completing training at VictoriaUniversity to acquire the necessary skills that will be complementary to their work at Netsolutions. Netsolutions will provide office space, staff supervision and the necessary hardware and software to the students during the program.

“The Brumby Labor Government is committed to working closely with the education sector to strengthen links with industry and encourage a practical approach to learning. The ICT Skills University Scholarships Program provides students with the skills they need to succeed in the ICT industry and keep Victoria at the forefront of new technology,” said John Lenders, Minister for Information and Communication Technology.

The program is part of the Victorian Government’s $1.84 million ICT Skills Package under the Building Our Industries for the Future strategy, geared at boosting the number of skilled workers in Victoria.
