Extends Leading Security and Networking Portfolio to Virtual Environments with World-renowned Security Intelligence from DVLabs and the Zero Day Initiative

SYDNEY – February 25, 2010 – 3Com Corporation (NASDAQ: COMS) today announced four new products and solutions from its TippingPoint and H3C portfolios to extend theSecure Network Fabric to next-generation data centres and virtual networks. The Secure Network Fabric integrates 3Com’s industry-leading TippingPoint intrusion prevention system (IPS) technology and H3C enterprise network and security solutions to reduce network security risks, management complexity and infrastructure costs in modern data centres. With centralized policy management across security and networking operations, 3Com’s Secure Network Fabric now reaches into virtualized data centres to ensure comprehensive security and help drive down the cost of application deployment for both physical and virtual environments while delivering a low total cost of ownership.

New Technologies and Business Requirements Drive the Evolution of Securing the Next-Generation Data Centre

The risk to business continuity is increasing as the data centre becomes the central, strategic location for shared resources and the most complex component of the IT environment. The adoption of new virtualization, cloud, Software-as-a-Service (SaaS), and Web technologies have changed traffic patterns and driven consolidation and the concentration of business-critical assets into fewer locations.

Until recently, the network perimeter was clearly defined and the routes into the network easy to protect. Today, business applications tunnel through or bypass perimeters, hackers exploit vulnerabilities in new Web applications, and mobile workers with smart phones open up multiple remote paths into corporate networks. This trend, coupled with the way people use technology, is reshaping the data centre, placing new demands on network capacity and security, and undermining the effectiveness of traditional security methods.

Virtual environments must meet the same stringent network and security requirements as their physical counterparts. 3Com is responding to these emerging technologies and requirements with an extensive range of networking and security solutions to support and secure the migration to a virtualized data centre. As key components of the 3Com Secure Network Fabric, the H3C and TippingPoint solutions help organizations mitigate risks to business continuity by protecting network connected devices and defending critical entry and isolation points against ever-evolving global security threats.

“As organizations make the shift to a virtual data centre environment, they need to ensure that the security component is paramount to the deployment,” said Richard Steinnon, principal analyst at IT-Harvest. “The extensive range of solutions across 3Com’s portfolio provides the protection, performance and cost savings organizations need to meet and exceed their virtual network security requirements.”

To support and broaden the Secure Network Fabric in the virtualized data centre, 3Com introduced four new solutions for large enterprises, including:

TippingPoint Secure Virtualization Framework Solution – a new virtualization solution that will enable organizations to pass virtual machine (VM) traffic – including host-to-host traffic – through a TippingPoint Intrusion Prevention System Platform. The TippingPoint Secure Virtualization Framework extends TippingPoint’s industry-leading threat research capabilities, breadth of protection, ease-of-use and security automation capabilities into the virtual infrastructure.          TippingPoint 1500S – a new purpose-built Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) appliance that effectively and safely decrypts and inspects secure Web traffic without impacting network or application performance. The TippingPoint 1500S prevents encrypted attacks from compromising virtual and physical Web servers and Web applications. [TippingPoint 1500S Product Announcement]

TippingPoint ThreatLinQ 2.0 – enhancements to the ThreatLinQ global security intelligence portal delivers new functionality for customers to create filter profiles customized for their network environment, correlate emerging threats with the latest Digital Vaccine filters and implement policy changes based on real-time threat information quickly to their TippingPoint IPS Platforms.          H3C S9500E – A new data centre and enterprise core switching platform rounds out the industry’s broadest and most scalable network infrastructure portfolio. The S9500E delivers high performance and capacity to meet the most rigorous core and data centre applications in an energy efficient platform that delivers flexibility and enables virtualized services on the network while helping to reduce operational expense. “Although the deployment of virtual networks provides organizations with the ability to design an efficient data centre that is easier to manage and more cost effective, the business benefits could be negated by increased security exposure and the new complexities of today’s evolving threat landscape,” said Ron Sege, president and COO of 3Com. “Our new virtual networking and security solutions address this exposure and help customers drive towards uncompromised security, operational efficiency and regulatory compliance.”
