DATACOM PLAYS KEY ROLE IN QUEENSLAND NICKEL TRANSITION

Announcement posted by Datacom 10 Mar 2010

Datacom Townsville was recently engaged to play a role in Queensland Nickel’s transition of business systems project. Queensland Nickel operates the Yabulu Refinery; a nickel refinery based 25 kilometres north-west of Townsville, which was sold by BHP B

Following the sale, Queensland Nickel required a foundation of reliable IT infrastructure from which they could maintain day-to-day operations. Datacom was selected to design, coordinate and provide Web Development Services for Queensland Nickel in addition to providing services to assist with an OCS & Mobility solution, application packaging, and Office 2007 training. Datacom also secured a contract to supply local resources to the value of $18,000 to be extended as required, and resources to assist with their desktop rollout program.

“It was important for Queensland Nickel to identify a panel of suppliers who would not only provide the necessary solutions in a timely manner, but would also meet our budget,” says Basil Ahyick, Chief Financial Officer, at Queensland Nickel.

The Townsville branch uniquely positions Datacom as a regional partner of choice to provide ongoing support for the Yabulu Refinery which satisfied Queensland Nickel’s strong focus on working with locally based regional suppliers.

The win has furthered strengthened Datacom’s status in the North Queensland regional market and has enabled Datacom to employ additional staff in its Townsville office and broaden the branch’s services offerings to the wider regional business community.

Software Services Business Manager for Datacom Systems Queensland, Kurt Nasarenko, said “This SharePoint project went from concept to go-live in less than five weeks, and that sets a new standard for a project like this. It was possible only because of the collaborative style from all parties involved, and the “Just-Enough documentation” we developed to describe the requirements and build the systems required.”

About Queensland Nickel

Queensland Nickel operates the Yabulu Refinery which is located 25 kilometres north-west of Townsville, in Queensland, Australia. The Refinery is a leader in the production and marketing of high quality nickel and cobalt. The Refinery processes nickel and cobalt-bearing laterite ores purchased from third party mines in New Caledonia, Indonesia and the Philippines. Nickel ore is dried, ground, roasted and leached in an ammonia solution to extract the nickel and cobalt in the processing plant. Nickel and cobalt are separated and further refined in the metal refining area, to produce products for sale in the global market.
