Converged Devices are the Next Big Thing in Australia's Smart Handheld Device Market, Finds IDC

Announcement posted by IDC 01 Dec 2004

Converged device shipments in Australia reached an all time high in the third quarter of 2004, making up 66.3% of the total smart handheld device market. This significant growth was mainly attributed to data-centric devices, which grew 58% from the previous quarter, while the voice-centric space posted 48% quarter-on-quarter growth. The pen-based or traditional PDA market had a dismal quarter, declining 13% from Q2 2004.
"The phenomenal growth posted by the converged device market in Q3 2004 was largely driven by a plethora of marketing promotions offered by mobile carriers and retail channels which include bundling with handset accessories, printers, and even photo printing promotions. However, the more compelling driver is still pricing - affordability and predictability in relation to pricing remains the most important consideration for consumers when deciding on their next converged device purchase," said, IDC Associate Analyst, Mercie Clement.
"From an OS perspective, Symbian emerged as the new leader, with 48.3% share of the total market. Microsoft was relegated to the second position, declining 11 percentage points from Q2 2004. The third position went to Palm who finished with just under 10% of the total market, " added Ms Clement.
The third quarter of 2004 saw a shift in vendor rankings in the total smart handheld device market. Motorola emerged as the new leader in Q3 2004, accounting for 26.5% share of the total handheld device market. Nokia finished in second position with 23.0% share, followed by HP with 20.6% share. Rounding out the top 5 were PalmOne and RIM with 9.7% and 7.3% share respectively.
Top five vendors (total market):
Motorola 26.5%
Nokia 23.0%
HP 20.6%
PalmOne 9.7%
RIM 7.3%
Other 12.9%
