A NEW round of cheap airfares is underway on the Australia-Los Angeles route, with fares again available for less than $900.

Flight Centre and leading US airline Delta are offering return fares on the popular Trans Pacific route from just $871 (including taxes) from Sydney.

Flight Centre Australia marketing manager Robert Crack said the fares were close to half their traditional prices and were comparable to those available last year, when fares plunged during the Global Financial Crisis.

"Fares to the United States fell dramatically last year when new carriers - including V Australia - started flying to Los Angeles at a time when demand was falling," Mr Crack said.

"Since the initial round of discounting, fares have remained well below traditional levels, but have crept up slightly and have generally been available for around the $1000 mark.

"These new fares with Delta are as cheap as we have seen and mean you can now fly to Los Angeles for a similar price to the cost of a flight to Hong Kong, Delhi or Manila."

The fares must be booked before May 31, 2010 for travel during August 2010.
