Peace of mind for seniors and their families

Announcement posted by Write Away Communication 05 Jul 2010

Safety and security are important considerations at any age but of particular relevance to senior citizens.

New Australian Bureau of Statistics figures have revealed that the number of people aged 75 years and over will more than double between 2006 and 2031, from 1.3 million to 2.9 million*, making safety at home an issue that will only continue to grow.

While maintaining an active and independent lifestyle is something many seniors hold dearly, this can cause anxiety for family members. Many choose to stay in their home as long as possible with 41 per cent of householders aged 65 to 74 years having lived in their current dwelling for 20 years or more. This figure rises to 52 per cent for the 75 years old or older segment.**

According to ADT Security’s Mark Norton, there is a simple solution.

“Regardless of whether seniors are living with a partner, family or alone, getting older does bring certain risks such as falls or sudden illness. In some incidents, it may be difficult to dial for assistance, while in others, family members may not be able to respond with the immediacy that the situation requires. In the event of an emergency, what remains important is that help is never far away.”

“Many people don’t realise that alarm systems are used not only for protecting your home but also for personal safety. Particularly for those who are older, have limited mobility or suffer from an illness, being able to easily raise an alarm for help is of vital importance.”

Offering low monthly monitoring fees, the IndiPendant personal emergency system from ADT Security provides users with the confidence to maintain their independent lifestyle, enabling seniors to stay in their home longer.

The system combines a lightweight, waterproof alarm, which can be worn as a pendant or wristband, and a monitoring station that plugs into the home phone line. This system is connected to ADT’s Security Response Centre, where trained monitoring operators supervise alarms 24 hours a day. Once an alarm has been activated and the Security Response Centre alerted, operators can notify a nominated contact, whether it be a family member, carer, health care professional, or if necessary, an ambulance.

“The IndiPendant system helps to provide peace of mind for seniors as someone is always on call to help. It’s also great comfort for their families, whether that’s in the form of daily monitoring or just knowing that our response team is only the push of a button away,” explained Norton.

The system has long-range capability designed to work throughout the home, and a two-way voice intercom doubles as a speakerphone with push-button answering.

A no obligation, free in-home demonstration can be arranged and device activated the same day.
