Keep decking well maintained all year round

Announcement posted by Boral 16 Aug 2010

As the cooler winter weather nears its end and spring gets closer, homeowners will be looking to spend more time outside in the sunshine.

With this in mind, now is a good time to check whether the backyard requires any attention before the entertaining season begins.

When it comes to hardwood decking, it is exposed to the elements all year round so needs to be looked after to maintain its rich colour and appeal.

To preserve the colour, as well as improve the life of the deck, apply a finish to the surface and reapply as often as recommended by the manufacturer.

Keep the deck swept to prevent the build up of dried leaves and debris and get rid of puddles of water sitting on the surface as this can result in the timber contracting when it dries. Regularly cleaning the surface will also help prevent spotting, which is caused by the build up of materials such as metal. If the deck does turn grey from weathering, a solution of oxalic acid crystals mixed with water will help restore it to its original colour and finish.

It’s also advisable to inspect the deck every few months to see if any nails are sticking out or whether there are any loose boards. Equally check that there are no rotting boards as these will need to be replaced.

For those who are considering installing hardwood timber decking for the first time, consider the environment around you as this will help determine what species to choose. Native Australian timbers are an excellent choice as they are perfectly suited to Australia’s climate and offer strength and durability. Species such as Blackbutt and Spotted Gum also offer fire resiting properties making them ideal for bushfire prone areas.

Timber also offers numerous environmental benefits as a natural and fully renewable resource. Boral Timber’s hardwood products are certified as being sourced from sustainable and legal resources, having achieved Chain of Custody certification. This is linked to the Australian Forestry Certification Scheme (AFCS) - the only scheme in Australia with an Australian Standard (AS4708-2007).
