New Australian research finds nearly 80 per cent of people dont feel their employers provide enough training

Announcement posted by Spherion 02 Oct 2002

Cost of training, lack of organisation and little value placed on staff were named as the main reasons for employers not providing adequate training
Research released today by Spherion Group has found that 78 per cent of survey respondents feel their employers do not provide enough training for them to do their jobs effectively. Conducted via Spherions web site, the survey was completed by more than 795 people.

When asked why their employers arent providing the training they need, 24 per cent cited that it cost too much and 19 per cent felt their employers did not value their staff. Another 21 per cent of respondents believe the need for someone to organise training was preventing their employer from providing any.

According to Richard Melouney, General Manager of Spherion Education, Australia, The overwhelming perception by employees that their companies do not provide enough training isnt surprising. What is surprising is that only six per cent of respondents cited the training budget has been cut. This implies that many employers simply dont value training or their staff, and this is a dangerous and short-term view.

Only 11 per cent of respondents felt their employers deemed training to be the responsibility of the individual while eight per cent stated their employers felt training wasted work time.

Training provides employees with the opportunity to develop and expand upon their existing skills, which is beneficial not just to the individual, but also to the company, Richard added.

Research conducted by the Saratoga Institute* shows that lack of training and education opportunities makes employees four times as likely to look for another job within 12 months, said Richard. Employers that dont plan for the long term development of their staff risk losing those people once the current economic downturn picks up.

These polls were conducted on Spherions web site (www.spherion.com.au) throughout 2002. More than 795 participants responded to each question.
