With a reputation as the best annual student party in Sydney, UNSW Oktoberfest 2010 organisers have implemented pre-event ticket sales for the first time in the event’s 27-year history.

“Oktoberfest had to turn 2000 people away last year when capacity was reached within two hours, so we decided to change our ticketing system this year,” Roundhouse manager Shelley Valentine said.

2010’s line up is a solid mix of dance and electro, indie, hip hop and RnB. Headlining the bill will be Ian Carey (USA), The Jezabels, Jonathan Boulet, Watussi, Snob Scrilla Sound System.

Background

Oktoberfest is a UNSW tradition. It’s a beer-fest without the bogans and a music festival iconic with students ready to don their dirndls, dance and drink like Germans.

1983 - In the beginning
Its beginnings are… blurry. A few hundred UNSW students, an oom-pah-pah band, a lot of beer and no liquor laws - it was the 80’s, you connect the dots.

1990’s – That escalated quickly
From this boozy start the party grew and so did its reputation. By the time we were in “the recession we had to have”, you couldn’t fit anymore steins, bratwurst, lederhosen or dirndls into its traditional home; UNSW’s Squarehouse - It was time to move.

2000’s – Turn it to 11
After making its home the Roundhouse in 1996, Oktoberfest exploded into the noughties, with thousands of students ‘’making German party’’ on multiple dancefloors and bars to acts such as The Lost Valentinos, Grafton Primary, The Potbelleez, Cassette Kids, Van She Tech, Hook N Sling, Aston Shuffle, Bang Gang, Purple Sneakers DJs and many more.

2009 – The angry mob
Last year Oktoberfest reached capacity (5000) at 7pm, blowing the minds of organisers. 2000 students were turned away in a huff, prompting pre-event ticket sales in 2010.

2010 – Pre-sale tickets
Pre-event tickets are ready to be snapped up by eager students and general German-loving public in the hope they don’t miss what’s always an awesome annual event – ja!
