The annual Rutherglen wine benchmarking tasting occurred yesterday at Valhalla Wines in Rutherglen. The tasting, organised by the winemaking group within the Winemakers of Rutherglen, allows wineries the opportunity to place their current vintage wines alongside others from within the district and compare and contrast the differences.

The table wines were organised into four different sections; new take on traditional favourites, Rhone style wines, alternative varieties and traditional approach to traditional wines. A major strong point of the tasting is the positive environment the tasting occurs in. Howard Anderson member on the board of the Winemakers of Rutherglen and organiser of the event, believed the tasting to be a “wonderful opportunity for a constructive comparative tasting allowing winemakers the perspective to further enhance the table wines coming out of the region.”

“The tasting provides a positive platform to further improve the quality of the wines coming from the Rutherglen Region. It enables Rutherglen Estates the opportunity to compare our wine with our peers from Rutherglen, look into how our wine fits within the region, discuss quality and consistency and most importantly provide our staff with further knowledge of which winery produces what, a great way to provide recommendations to customers in the future” explained Marc Scalzo, winemaker from Rutherglen Estates.

The Winemakers of Rutherglen is a community of nineteen winemakers dedicated to the ongoing development of superior wines and exceptional wine tourism experiences. Through unity and commitment to quality the Winemakers of Rutherglen continue to grow wine brands globally and foster excellence in destination tourism.
