Pearl Beach Wins Keep Australia Beautiful NSW Clean Beach Award

Announcement posted by Pitch PR 14 Jan 2011

The State’s leading grassroots environmental organisation Keep Australia Beautiful NSW will officially present the Pearl Beach community with the NSW Overall Clean Beach Award 2011 on Wednesday, January 19 at 11am at the Beachfront Reserve.

Pearl Beach is a popular getaway spot on the Central Coast with a thriving bushland and an ecosystem that is protected by proud community volunteers and Gosford City Council.

Peter McLean, CEO of Keep Australia Beautiful NSW, presented the award and said restoration work to the Pearl Beach rock pool and dunes as well as a number of educational activities had made Pearl Beach a worthy winner.

“Apart from being an amazingly attractive beach and a hidden jewel off the Central Coast, Pearl Beach has a community who are proud guardians and protect the area’s environmental and cultural significance,” Mr McLean said.

“The Pearl Beach Progress Association, Bushcare Group and Gosford City Council all need to be praised for their ongoing and dedicated attention to this fantastic beach.”

Notable achievements and outcomes at Pearl Beach include:

- extensive restoration of dunes by local Dune Care group

- non-mechanical beach cleaning to prevent disruption to the beach ecosystem.

- a wildlife corridor in the arboretum linking it with Brisbane Waters National Park.

- effective community partnerships

- interactive educational activities for locals and visitors

As the State Overall winner, Pearl Beach is a contender for the National Clean Beaches Awards, vying with other State and Territory Overall winners for the top title of Australia’s Cleanest Beach 2010/11. It will be visited by a national judge on February 8.

The Keep Australia Beautiful NSW Clean Beaches program raises environmental awareness on the coastline and has been working with coastal communities since 2001.

The revitalised NSW Clean Beaches program will be launched this year. It encourages and rewards the efforts of coastal communities that work collaboratively for the sustainability of their beach.

Clean Beaches is a Keep Australia Beautiful NSW initiative, partnered with Department of Environment, Climate Change and Water, and Sydney Water.
