Melbourne secures film adaptation of Arthur Miller’s A View From The Bridge

Announcement posted by Film Victoria 20 Jan 2011

Innovation, Services and Small Business Minister Louise Asher today announced that the film adaptation of Arthur Miller’s award-winning play A View From The Bridge will be made in Victoria.

Ms Asher said the feature film, which will complete pre-production, filming and post-production in Melbourne, was attracted to the state by the Victorian Government through Film Victoria’s Production Investment Attraction Fund.

A View From The Bridge will be produced by Australia’s Anthony La Paglia and UK-based Australian producer Marion Pilowsky alongside LA-based producer Natalie Stevenson, and directed by Robert Connolly (Balibo) from a screenplay by Andrew Bovell (Lantana). It stars La Paglia, Sam Neill, Mia Wasikowska (Alice in Wonderland), Academy Award nominee Vera Farmiga (Up in the Air) and newcomer Sebastian Stan (Black Swan).

“One of Victoria’s biggest strengths is its diverse range of locations but we’re also home to world-class screen infrastructure and crews, outstanding film commission services, and film-friendly metropolitan and regional councils,” Ms Asher said.

“The Victorian Government is committed to supporting all these elements of our production attraction package so that we continue to secure quality film productions such as A View From The Bridge.

“ We’re helping to put Victoria on the world stage and promote our state as a great place to make films – it also takes advantage of our award-winning post-production, digital and visual effects services,” Ms Asher said.

Film Victoria CEO Sandra Sdraulig said A View From The Bridge will employ at least 70 Victorian crew and give talented local practitioners an opportunity to further develop their skills and experience, which in turn increases the capabilities of the local industry.

Producer Mr La Paglia said Film Victoria's amazing production services location support and advice made a difficult choice simple.
“Combined with Victoria's incredible diversity of locations and the creative depth of specialised local crew, it made Melbourne a perfect home for this project,” Mr La Paglia said.

Arthur Miller’s compelling drama about love and betrayal is set in 1950s Brooklyn and follows the story of longshoreman Eddie Carbone, his wife Beatrice and her orphaned niece Catherine. Mr La Paglia secured the film rights and Arthur Miller’s approval after starring in the 1998 Broadway production, for which he won a Tony Award for best actor as Eddie Carbone. His role will be reprised for the film.

Exact locations for A View From The Bridge are in the process of being finalised, and the production will commence filming in Melbourne in June 2011.
