Corporate soccer teams to kick goals for cyclone Yasi victims

2011 International chamber of commerce world cup fundraising effort

Sydney, 10/2/2011: 64 corporate soccer teams participating in the 2011 International Chamber of Commerce World Cup in April-May will take on a dual challenge of scoring goals for World Cup glory and raising money for cyclone-affected communities in North Queensland.

Event organiser Football Development Australia (FDA) is encouraging fundraising efforts before and during the Cup games in Sydney and Melbourne (dates) by creating a fundraising page for each of the participating corporate teams to donate to a charity of their choice.

Teams are encouraged to start their fundraising efforts now, by sharing their web page details with their own networks.

FDA will also donate $50 per each of the 64 team participating (more than $3000 in total) to the “Far North Queensland Hospital Foundation” and “Yasi Relief – Lifeline Australia”.

Cormac Begley, FDA’s Director said: “We are aiming to create a bit of rivalry not only on the soccer field, but also in the fundraising stakes. The two most successful fundraising teams will be given a free entry to the 2012 International Chamber of Commerce World Cup, valued at $2310 each.

“We find that many employers now encourage their staff’s participation in sporting events, as there is a well documented link between a fit workforce and the company’s financial success.” adds Begley.

“Activities such as long distance running help employees become fitter, but with soccer there is that added element of teamwork – unless players communicate well, motivate each other and follow their leader, the team will not do well. Celebrating a goal together – it is a moment that energises the team and brings people together like no other sporting effort.”

There is no doubt that players representing their company and a country of their choice in this event are passionate about soccer and keen to take home the FIFA World Cup trophy replica, but the added fundraising element allows their colleagues and friends to feel included, and show their support.

In 2010, teams from some of Australia's largest corporates participated in the International Chamber of Commerce World Cup - Macquarie Bank, KPMG, HCF Insurance, American Express, Hyundai, Lindt, Qantas, APC, Sony Entertainment, SAP, Oracle and many others.
