Penley Estate Releases Latest Phoenix

Announcement posted by Penley Estate 11 Feb 2011

The 2009 vintage sees Penley Estate’s Phoenix Cabernet Sauvignon rise from the ashes renewed and stronger then the last.

Penley’s Phoenix Cabernet is sourced from their Coonawarra vineyard where the terra rossa soil and underlying limestone provides this wine with its own distinct characters. “The classic cassis characters and minerality in this wine is unique to Coonawarra” said owner and winemaker Kym Tolley. “Penley’s winemaking; including heading down tanks, cooler fermentation and a selection of French oak add further complexity to our cabernet.”

Despite a slow start to the growing season Coonawarra’s ideal weather conditions of warm days and cool nights created a supreme vintage producing bright, fragrant fruit and long silky tannins. Penley’s winemaker Greg Foster is very confident of the finished product, “the 2009 vintage was great with the wines showing a strong regional focus. The tannins are quite grippy as the wines are young, however these will soften and mellow with age.”

The 2009 release follows up the Phoenix’s previous success having been awarded a gold medal in the Limestone Coast Wine Show two years in a row. The unique, classic flavours exude the true character of the Coonawarra region to make this popular wine a proud member of the Penley Estate family.
