Scoopon is better than sex!

Announcement posted by The Catch Group 29 Apr 2011

Scoopon free iPhone app is No. 1 in Australia under lifestyle category, beating “280 + sex positions” and Facebook in Top 25 rankings (all categories)
29 April, 2011: Melbourne, Australia: It’s official. Australians prefer shopping at Scoopon to sex! Latest Apple App Store rankings reveal that Australia’s number one[1] group buying site has topped the free lifestyle iPhone application category, beating “280+ best sex positions” (ranked #2). The app is also currently ranked in the top 5 free applications downloaded, beating Facebook, eBay, and realestate.com.au.

The Scoopon iPhone application delivers exclusive daily deals direct to your phone everyday at 12 noon. From restaurant deals, to day spas, travel, accommodation and entertainment, once you see a deal you like, you simply select “buy” and the Scoopon coupon gets delivered direct to your phone.

Jon Beros, general manager of Scoopon says the company has seen phenomenal growth in their iPhone application with downloads growing by up to 486 per cent per week.

“Our customers hate to miss out on a deal, and they never have to with our iPhone app,” said Beros.

“During holiday periods especially, sales using our iPhone app go through the roof as more people are mobile. During the Easter holiday period for example, sales using the iPhone application represented 20 percent of total sales volumes.”

Beros says that based on the success of the Scoopon iPhone application, the company is looking to launch an Android version in the coming months.

“Every month 500,000 smart phones are sold in Australia. Approximately five million people are using mobile broadband applications, and as an online retailer we need to remain open to new opportunities and look for ways we can enhance the shopping experience for our customers.’

An iPhone application for Scoopon’s daily deals sister site, CatchoftheDay, is currently in development.

“ M-commerce represents a huge opportunity for retailers and the integration of mobile technologies to deliver a more personalized shopping experience. We have a number of new initiatives on the cards and look forward to sharing these with our members in coming months,” said Beros.

Consultancy firm Paul Budde Communication reports that m-commerce usage has grown from one percent in 2010 to 10 percent of total e-commerce in March 2011. Budde predicts that by the end of 2011 this could increase to a point where m-commerce constitutes a quarter of financial transactions taking place in this Australia.
