Coffey Information Awarded Holbrook Bypass

Announcement posted by Coffey International Limited 24 May 2011

(Sydney, Australia): Global professional services consultancy Coffey International Limited (“Coffey”) today announced securing a contract with Abigroup to deliver construction materials testing services for the Holbrook Bypass on the Hume Highway. The contract is expected to be worth approximately $8 million.

Coffey Information will provide laboratory and field testing services including construction materials conformance and quality control testing during the construction phase of the project.

Coffey Information’s group executive Michael Renehan said the contract reflects Coffey’s specialist knowledge in major infrastructure projects and the strong working relationship established with the Abigroup.

“This win is a result of the strong relationship we have developed with Abigroup on the Hume Highway Woomargama Alliance project. On this project we focused on quality materials testing services for better infrastructure outcomes whilst maintaining client value.

“We’ve invested in new lean design methodologies with over 17 months of research and development before implementing the new methodology on the Woomargama project where it reduced materials testing time by 35 percent,” he said.

Tony Edwards, Abigroup’s Engineering and High Performance Manager, said he hoped to achieve quality project outcomes by working collaboratively with Coffey Information.

“We achieved outstanding turnaround times for test results on the Woomargama project, which significantly reduced production costs and program risks. We also agreed to innovative KPI’s to set new benchmarks in quality outcomes and we hope to emulate this on the Holbrook project,” he said.

Coffey Information global business development manager Matt Morley said it was an important achievement.

“Our involvement and client-focused approach to high-profile projects such as the Holbrook Bypass and the M80 Ring Road in Victoria cements Coffey Information as the market leader in construction materials testing for large infrastructure projects within the APAC region,” he said.

The construction of the $247million Holbrook Bypass, jointly funded by the governments of Australia and the State of New South Wales, is the last major project on the Hume Highway. On completion, motorists will be able to drive on dual carriageway all the way from Sydney to Melbourne without encountering traffic lights. Work on the final 9.5 kilometre upgrade will include:

Completion of a four-lane divided highway between Sydney and Melbourne: 0.5 kilometres along the existing Hume Highway alignment north of Holbrook, 7 kilometres along a new alignment to the west of Holbrook and 2 kilometres along the existing Hume Highway alignment south of Holbrook;

Provide grade-separated interchanges to the north and south of Holbrook for easy access between the highway and the town; and,

Include twin bridges over both Culcairn Road, and Ten Mile Creek.

The construction contract for Holbrook Bypass was awarded to Abigroup in February 2011 with the project due for completion in 2013.
