State of Origin Team Coffee Challenge Results

Announcement posted by Harvest Ideas 29 May 2011

Last Sunday saw the first barista state of origin held in Melbourne at the Australian Coffee Festival and Cafebiz 2011 at the Melbourne Showground.

The round robin competition pitted Victoria, NSW and ACT in Group A, with Qld, SA and WA in Group B. In what was a tightly contested competition, Victoria won its group and is joined by the other state finalists at the Sydney Fine Food Show in September.

Congratulations to the victorious Victorian state team on their expert coffee making skills, not to mention their ability to really rock a 70s look. Headbands, long socks, scooped running shorts, tri-coloured hair ribbons and matching T-shirts were the order of the day for Victoria.

Captained by Erin Sampson from Veneziano Coffee, Australia's most awarded female barista who departs this week for the World Barista Competition in Bogota, Columbia. Showcasing superb Victorian barista talent, the other talented team members comprised of: Remy Shpayzer of Eclipse fame; Caleb Podhaczky of Five Senses, who also happens to be the current Victorian Barista Champion; and finalist in this year's Australian Barista Championship, Ronald Ngo, who has recently joined the Five Senses roasting team.

The competition is designed to replicate a busy caf environment with multiple drinks being produced within a tight timeframe whilst upholding quality standards. Each team consisted of four of their state’s best baristas who raced against the clock to produce 30 drinks in 20 minutes.

To save the judges from serious coffee overload, the judging criteria was different for each drink served and ranged from latte art to temperature to flavour. Judges simply compared each drink and gave a vote to the preferred beverage in each category.

All in all, it was a fun day and the camaraderie within each team as well as the friendly banter between the teams, really demonstrated how tight knit and supportive the specialty coffee industry is.
