Enterasys Networks unveils the industry's first 10-Gigabit Ethernet Strategy for Enterprise Networks

Announcement posted by Enterasys Networks 08 May 2001

Enterasys Networks has announced its strategy for delivering the industry's first 10-Gigabit Ethernet networking platform to meet the performance needs of enterprise and metropolitan networks. Enterasys, a
member of the 10-Gigabit Ethernet Alliance (10 GEA), will first deliver 10-Gigabit capabilities in its Matrix' switching platform and follow with similar offerings in its switching lines.

By delivering 10-Gigabit Ethernet, Enterasys will meet the rising performance and capacity needs of local area network (LAN), wide area network (WAN) and metropolitan area network (MAN) environments. As organisations and their networks transition to a more distributed model, and as more information and bandwidth-intensive applications are added to networks, enterprises must build LANs that enable the use of emerging models of content location and delivery.

Enterasys' 10-Gigabit offerings will provide breakthrough performance levels at a critical point the network edge where enterprise LANs meet high-capacity optical metropolitan networks. Early adopters of this technology could include organisations that have maximised the capacity of their installed fibre optic cabling and campus business-to-business networks.

Enterasys' 10-Gigabit program, developed by John Roese, Enterasys Networks' CTO and the co-author of the emerging 802.1X standard, is based on the concept of "Unlocking the Optical Internet Application," or UTOPIA. Under
this concept, "utopia" is reached when the capacity of the LAN, WAN and MAN move to a level that provides a zero latency experience between people, applications and content regardless of their location. UTOPIA is driven by
the evolution of Ethernet to the MAN and WAN, and based on the IEEE's 802.3ae 10-Gigabit specifications. Enterasys is a voting member of the 802.3ae committee.

"The vision of the optical Internet is emerging but is only partially realised at this point. It will evolve to provide global bandwidth at almost infinite levels," believes Ian Fewtrell, managing director of Enterasys Networks.

"To realise the value of the optical Internet's evolution, enterprises must enhance the interface to this optical network from their LANs. Enterasys will lead the movement toward closing the gap between LANs and the optical Internet by delivering 10-Gigabit capabilities across its switching and routing lines."

Enterasys' first 10-Gigabit Ethernet product, which will be delivered in the second half of 2001, will be an aggregation device with 10-Gigabit transport capabilities for enterprise LAN and MAN networks. The switch, which Enterasys Networks will display at NetWorld+Interop (booth #4679), will provide line-rate performance and a modular 10-Gigabit uplink with numerous transport options for the LAN and MAN.

"At CERN, research is fundamental to our organisation, and the experiments on our new large particle accelerator will produce vast amounts of data," said Jacques Altaber, deputy leader of Information Technology at CERN (the
European Laboratory for Particle Physics).

"We rely on data processing by a great many computers to achieve the scientific research in particle physics that we desire. High-bandwidth solutions are key to leveraging more computing power, so 10-Gigabit Ethernet is the next logical step for us. As a long-time Enterasys customer, we have been continually rewarded with higher performance switching and routing solutions that meet our demanding requirements.

We are positive on Enterasys' early adoption and delivery of 10-Gigabit Ethernet. It allows us to provide the networking support that our scientists need and gives us a certain future for bandwidth and computing expansion."
