New Men's and Women's race records set for the Inner West's favourite fun run.

SYDNEY AUGUST 11, 2011: BayRun 2011 – held last Sunday – was a roaring success on every level: race records were smashed, a record number of people ran and walked and almost $10,000 was raised for CanTeen.

Despite the Sydney skies threatening rain on the morning, participants were undaunted and a record 2,850 registered for the race.

“This year’s BayRun surpassed all our expectations,” race director, Scott Machin, said. “The slightly shorter course and the quality of the field meant both the men’s and women’s records were smashed; in fact the first three men and women broke the respective records.”

The men’s winner was Lachlan Chisholm with a time of 20.46 minutes, breaking the race record by 35 seconds. Chisholm has twice been Australian 1500m men’s champion. He took the lead during the middle stages of the race and held off Tony Craig to win by seven seconds. Kevin Batt was third a further eight seconds behind.

Melinda Vernon took out the women’s event in a time of 24.05 minutes.Vernon, who is a previous winner of the race, returned this year from injury. In 2009 she won the City to Surf and Sydney Half Marathon. She won by 21 seconds from Milly Clark, followed by Tara Prowse a further 19 seconds behind in third.

The Boys and Girls 2km Primary School Challenge was taken out by Ryan Beetson and Samantha Brown respectively.

Scott Baxter and Maisy proved she was indeed the Fastest Dog in the Inner West, winning for the second consecutive year.

A huge effort was made by all the runners, walkers and volunteers on the day made possible by BayRun 2011 sponsors - Muirs Holden and Muirs KIA Ashfield, NAB, Warwick Williams, adidas, Canada Bay Club, Balmain Sports Medicine, Navarra Venues (Le Montage),Vision Personal Training, Traffik and our media partner 2GB.
