Legendary Rare Wines Found in Closet

Announcement posted by Wickmans Fine Wine Auctions 22 Sep 2011

The holy grail of Australian red wine, Penfolds 1962 Bin 60a, will go under the hammer on Monday night, expected to fetch in excess of $4,000

ADELAIDE, AUSTRALIA – September 22, 2011 -- Listed alongside 1945 Chateau Mouton Rothschild, 1961 Chateau Latour and 1959 Domaine Romanee Conti Richebourg by Decanter magazine as one of the greatest ever wines to try before you die, two bottles of very rare 1962 Penfolds Bin 60a Cabernet Shiraz are set to go under the online hammer at Wickman's Fine Wine Auctions (www.wickman.net.au) on Monday Night. Discovered by accident when spring cleaning, an Adelaide couple are very excited by the prospect of this unexpected windfall, likely to fetch in excess of $4,000 for each bottle.

"For over 30 years this wine has been one of Penfolds most successful show wines and continually evokes heady emotional responses whenever and wherever it is tasted." said auctioneer Mark Wickman. "Often it is described as a pure emotional experience, a pinnacle of taste sensations rarely, if ever, exceeded."

"This wine has its origins steeped in the mystique surrounding the conception of Penfolds Grange in the fifties when small batches of experimental, one off, wines were crafted by the Penfolds winemakers to shadow the forging of a Grange. These "Special bin reds" (such as the 1962 Bin 60a, the 1967 Bin 7 and 1996 Block 42) have, over the decades, given rise to wines of such subliminal beauty that they enter the halls of legend and firmly place Penfolds as a leader in the top rank of the worlds key wine estates." Wickman said.

There are also many other wines for sale in the same auction including over $40,000 worth of Red Bordeaux from a private Adelaide collector that has remarkable provenance, very important in the eyes of today's astute wine enthusiast.

The on-line auction is currently open for bidding and will end this Monday night the 26th of September.
