Australian children are 12 times more likely to use sunscreen in summer if their parents do too, according to a study reported today in www.itsmyhealth.com.au.
Other adult sun protection practices such as seeking shade and wearing clothing protecting the legs also had a strong influence on children’s sun-safe behaviours.
The researchers from multiple centres across Australia and New Zealand interviewed 1140 caregivers of children 0 to 11-years-old.
On summer weekends 73% of children spent at least 15 minutes outdoors during the peak times for ultra violet rays between 10 am and 3 pm.
