Cuscal Appoints Tecala To Design and Implement Data Centre Backup Project

Announcement posted by Tecala 11 Oct 2011

New backup system to protect production and disaster recovery data centres
Sydney, 11 October 2011-- Cuscal Limited, owner and operator of the well-known RediATM network and Australia's leading provider of transactional banking, liquidity and capital management products has engaged IT infrastructure services specialist, Tecala, to design and implement a new disk-based backup system for the company's Sydney production data centre and its Lane Cove disaster recovery data centre.  Work on the project began earlier this month and is due for completion in late 2011.

Tecala's solution is based on a number of next-generation EMC technologies, including an Avamar Rain backup and de-duplication device, EMC Networker backup and recovery software and Data Protection Advisor for advanced analytical and reporting capabilities. It also includes a specially designed backup schedule that encompasses all Cuscal production IT workloads – from email and file servers through to critical back-end banking and settlement systems.

Michael Magoulias, Manager Infrastructure Services, Cuscal says, “Our underlying requirement for this project is to update the backup technology and where possible, to realise efficiencies. We believe Tecala's design will achieve this.”

Replacement of the existing tape-based system with a disk and on-line alternative is expected to reduce Cuscal's tape media, library and management costs by up to 90 per cent.  The introduction of de-duplication technology that identifies redundant data at source, thereby reducing the amount of data being sent over the network is also expected to dramatically decrease the amount of time required to conduct each backup.

Equally importantly, online storage of backup data will also ensure that Cuscal has rapid access to backup data and, should the worst occur, its production and disaster recovery data centres will be back up and running as quickly as possible.

Magoulias adds, “Tecala is a trusted partner of ours.  We look to them for advice on a range of areas including backup, storage and infrastructure. They first came on board to assist us with an issue that we couldn't get rectified by other parties almost two-and-a-half years ago.  They've since won a lot of our business because of what they were able to prove back then.”
