No relief on cost to see a doctor

Announcement posted by It's My Health 13 Oct 2011

According to consumer health information site www.itsmyhealth.com.aupatients hoping for a bit of hip-pocket relief when they visit the doctor will be sorely disappointed with Medicare rebates for a standard consultation set to rise by a paltry 65 cents this November.

With many GPs charging at least $65 dollars for a standard consultation, patients will only get back $29.45 for their visit.

Health economists are saying Medicare is no longer equitable with the poor having to pay more to access a doctor’s services, and a recent survey showing 22% of Australian’s had put off seeing a doctor or filling a prescription because of the high costs. The AMA is urging patients to complain to the federal health minister, Nicola Roxon.
