Rad releases smallest high-capacity stm-1 terminal multiplexer

Announcement posted by Paclink 04 Jul 2002

Paclink has announced the release of RAD Data Communications New STM-1 Module Grooms Multiple Data Streams on to a single STM-1 Link.

The new STM-1 module for RADs DXC multiservice access nodes maximises bandwidth by grooming traffic from a wide range of DXC modules directly to a single, standard STM-1 link.

The unique STM-1 module in the DXC creates an STM-1 terminal and a 1/0 cross connect into a single, compact device.

According to Craig Martyn, Director of Paclink, the unit is the smallest unit of its kind on the market today.

"It combines STM-1 Terminal and 1/0 cross connect in one cost effective unit. There is virtually no competition to this one-box solution. The 1U chassis is the smallest unit on the market that combines STM-1 and 32 additional ports. RADs large unit, only 3U high, supports the STM-1 module and 112 additional ports," Mr Martyn said.

Deploying only one unit lowers capital expenses, eliminates the need for multiple management systems and reduces the possible points of failure.

Maximises Bandwidth and Reduces Access Costs
The DXC equipped with the STM-1 nodule connects to the add-drop multiplexer (ADM) on STM-n networks using a single STM-1 link, thereby saving costly tributary ports on the ADM. And the device maximises data traffic over SDH because it grooms on a timeslot basis, enabling the unit to pack timeslots more efficiently in the VC-12 containers. The cc module connects to any ADM tributary STM-1 port, SDH terminal STM-1 uplink port, or another DXC device. It can be managed via an ASCII terminal as well as by network management station.

Enhanced Backup Options
The 2-port module enables link protection where each port can have a different interface. For example, the main link can be fibre while the backup link can be coax connected to wireless equipment.
