Langley Group: Driving Emotional Intelligence

Announcement posted by marcus evans, summits division 18 Nov 2011

Sue Langley from Langley Group, a sponsor company at the marcus evans HR Summit 2012, on making use of Emotional Intelligence within the workplace.

Organisations may be overlooking their most significant resource: happy, engaged employees, says Sue Langley, Director, Langley Group.

From a sponsor company at the upcoming marcus evans HRSummit 2012,taking placein the Gold Coast, Australia, 4 - 6 March, Langley discusses the importance of employee satisfaction and how that impacts motivation in the workplace.

Why should organisations place a stronger focus on Emotional Intelligence?

Sue Langley: Emotional Intelligence (EI) is about the intelligent use of emotions. It is about being able to recognise and manage emotional data. It is resilience.

Taking a look at EI allows human resources (HR) directors and leaders to understand employee internal behaviours, get the best out of them and manage them more effectively. Research shows that embedding positive psychology principles can have a massive impact on an organisation’s performance. Increasing the duration and intensity of positive emotions in the workplace and reducing negativity, allows employees to leverage their strengths and improve their performance.

People who are satisfied with their lives within and outside the workplace are more cooperative and helpful to colleagues, more punctual, report fewer sick days, remain with the organisation for longer and have higher performance outcomes.

How can HR directors help further develop talent within the organisation?

Sue Langley: In the past few years, organisations have focused so much on results that sometimes they forget the employees achieving these outcomes. Taking a step back and looking at employee wellbeing may help them get the most out of employees.

Neuroscience can provide huge insights into how to work with people more effectively. For instance, the human brain has an error detector mechanism yet still our change management practices use tools that trigger this and we wonder why we get a negative result. Understanding how humans work in general and individually would give room for talent management.

How can HR better motivate staff?

Sue Langley: Organisations focus on remuneration and bonuses to stimulate employees, yet research shows that in many Western cultures paying people more for certain tasks reduces performance. EI, neuroscience and positive psychology may give us better insights into how to motivate more effectively.

We must recognise the difference between behaviour and behavioural drivers. To identify behavioural drivers we must look at personality, past experiences, values, beliefs and self confidence. By exploring all pieces of the puzzle, HR can better understand what makes a person tick and what makes them motivated.

What employee retention strategies would you recommend?

Sue Langley: It is important that organisations leverage the strengths of their employees. The human brain is biased towards threats and negativity yet strengths are where we get the most value. Using a strengths based approach in business has been shown to have dramatic results.

If leaders and HR emphasise strengths to encourage and retain employees, it will keep performance and engagement high.
