Children are choosing to learn about food additives and nutrition

The first ever book to encourage children to look inside what they are eating and take responsibility for their own health has been produced by an Australian mum and author who has spent the past 2 years assisting families to overcome behavioural issues and other symptoms through simple diet changes.

Tegan Benfell’s latest book What’s Really in my Food? Contains beautiful, bright illustrations and child friendly information on food additives, basic nutrition, seeing through the tricks in marketing campaigns and why it is so important to look after their bodies.

The inspiration for this book came when Tegan presented her first information session directed at primary school children about food additives and was bombarded with questions on the topic. “The children were so excited to be learning about these issues and were fascinated about the subject of food additives and health. Children really do want to know how to stay healthy and to do this they need to understand food additives.” Tegan Says.

The local Author’s previous book, Additive Free Kids Parties has been very popular amongst families wanting to avoid the harmful effects of food additives without missing out on fun and colourful foods. Many of these families have already ordered their copy of What’s Really in my Food, commenting that it will be a wonderful resource to keep the children on track with their healthy lifestyle.

Tegan’s initial inspiration to start researching food additives and the effects they have on children came when her oldest daughter Amelia was diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and was prescribed dexamphetamine by her local GP. Tegan refused to administer the medication but knew that her daughter’s out of control behaviour needed treatment.

After further research, Tegan removed all harmful food additives from her daughter’s diet and within two weeks the little girl was transformed back to a placid, calm four year old. She is now a normal and healthy eight year old child who displays no symptoms of ADHD, has many friends and is one of the top performing students at her school.

“Every one has the right to know exactly what is in the food they are eating, especially children. That is why I chose to create this book for them and their families”. Says Tegan

Over the past 4 years of researching, Tegan has found that there are many food additives which are banned in other countries such as the UK and America, yet are still permitted in our children’s food in Australia. Most of these food additives are known to cause symptoms like migraines, asthma, eczema, ADHD, depression and mood swings as well as many other symptoms that a lot of children are dealing with on a daily basis. This is why Tegan has created Additive Free Kids Pty Ltd, a local company that is dedicated to helping families alleviate these awful symptoms through simple changes.
