Coca-Cola Amatil awards the FORMULA iPhone App prestigious innovation award

Announcement posted by Digital Stampede 13 Dec 2011

Coca-Cola Amatil’s FORMULA app, developed by Sydney-based digital agency Digital Stampede, is a "bartender in your pocket".
Coca-Cola Amatil’s recently launched app for bartenders, FORMULA, has been formally recognised for its innovation by winning the company’s Innov8 Customer Centricity Category Award as well as overall Grand Champion Award for the whole Innov8 program. The app was developed through collaboration between the On-Premise team at CCA and Sydney-based digital agency, Digital Stampede.

The CCA On-Premise team came to Digital Stampede wanting to produce ‘a bartender in your pocket’ largely aimed at a venue’s front-of-house team. Creating such a resource would not only benefit the industry as a whole by improving standards, but also position CCA On-Premise as the go-to team for beer, spirits, coffee and soft drink beverages. Until now, there has been no single standardised destination for best practice on each of these areas for the industry and CCA is uniquely placed to drive such an initiative.

Announcing Julian Train, On-Premise Senior Channel Manager and the FORMULA app as the Customer Centric category and overall Grand Champion winner, Warwick White, CCA Managing Director, Australasia comments, “The innovation epitomises the dedication to customer-centricity in our Licensed channel and clearly demonstrates the principles of persistence and dedication which underpin the INNOV8 program.” (see below for further information on the Innov8 program)

Launched in September, the FORMULA app is now the ultimate training tool for the hospitality industry. Developed over a six-month period in consultation with bars and pubs across the country, FORMULA enables bartenders to conveniently and regularly access practical information and training across the beer, coffee, spirits and soft drink beverage categories, and contains more than 50 videos and 200 images. For bartenders who don’t spend their day in front of a computer, it gives them access to critical information for their jobs quickly and easily.

Digital Stampede’s role was to take new and existing content and give it a brand look and feel on a mobile device. The desired user journey also required that the audience be able to access all content with a “two-touch” rule. “We developed the app with the target audience’s behaviour and time constraints in mind. Bartenders quickly need to find tips while on the go. It was important for users to be able to access any piece of content within two taps from the home screen. Unlike other apps, we didn’t want users getting lost in deep navigation,” says Amy Gray, Digital Stampede’s Client Services Director.

CCA placed great value on having good quality, rich instructional video in all areas of the content, but compensated for the often-noisy work environments of bars by offering alternative step by step images and content.

“We’ve had a great response from the industry”, says Julian. “Many bars and establishments are now using it as an integral part of their induction process because it provides comprehensive information on all the basics in both digestible text and video formats as well as some of the fundamental tips and tricks for bartenders. Bartenders and managers have loved the simplicity of the navigation.”

Version 2 with updated content and an Android app are currently being developed.

In 2011, the CCA Innov8 program received more than 3,500 nominations from across the business. Nominations are judged by senior leaders within the organisation for their overall impact, likelihood of financial and cultural benefits and ease of implementation. There are 5 categories across which innovations can be submitted - Safety, Engagement, Sustainability, Customer Centric, Efficiency. The Formula App took out the State and National Customer Centric Category Award. From the award winners across all of the above categories FORMULA was chosen as winner of the overall competition taking out the Grand Champion Innov8 award.

Innov8 is Coca-Cola Amatil’s program that drives innovation within CCA and has been running for four years. The program, with an emphasis on delivering real value to CCA customers and consumers, was launched through the Supply Chain division, receiving 97 nominations in its first year.

Since then INNOV8 has continued to grow and has resulted in the implementation of some fantastic innovations, including improvements to aged stock management reporting, the installation of weight detection systems on BIB carton sealers and enhancing warehouse pallet capacity.
