Announcement posted by iPlanet E-Commerce Solutions 09 May 2001

Platform for customers' enterprise and e-business user management infrastructure
* Key new features increase scalability, performance and management flexibility
* Next generation directory based on open standards
* Foundation for enabling future smart web services

iPlanet E-Commerce Solutions, a Sun-Netscape Alliance, has announced the availability of iPlanet* Directory Server 5.0, a leading directory server software solution for secure, personalised and scalable user management services. An open standards LDAP directory, the product is at the heart of today's Web services as well as the future smart Web services envisioned by iPlanet and Sun* Open Net Environment (Sun ONE).

iPlanet Directory Server 5.0 is the latest release of the award-winning product and features a new architecture that provides carrier-grade scalability, performance and availability.
With more than 400 million licenses sold to date, the iPlanet Directory Server powers some of the largest enterprise, e-commerce and consumer websites. Customers such as First Union, Ford and Schlumberger have deployed
the iPlanet Directory Server as a strategic foundation for their enterprise and e-business user management infrastructure. America Online, Inc. uses iPlanet Directory Server 5.0 for its 'My AOL' home page to help manage
personalisation settings and content, keeping My AOL fast, dynamic, flexible, and able to meet increasing demand.

The iPlanet Directory Server centralises the process of account provisioning, management, and deletion across the entire enterprise and extranet, unifying identity management for all users - including employees, suppliers, partners, and customers. These capabilities can help contribute to lower TCO (total cost of ownership) through more efficient and flexible management of users -- especially for extremely large enterprise and e-business deployments.

iPlanet envisions that businesses will aggressively advance from generic services toward "smart services" that create a more productive, personalised and valuable user experience. The requirements for adding "intelligence" to Web services are all managed by a directory that enables location and device independence. The iPlanet Directory Server 5.0 is a next-generation directory based on open standards and is the foundation for enabling these new services.

"iPlanet Directory Server continues to push the boundary on directory services with support for tens of millions of users and thousands of queries per second - the extreme scalability and performance that our customers have come to rely on to be successful in today's Net Economy," said Wes Wasson, vice president of product marketing at iPlanet. "This is what separates iPlanet Directory Server from standard network operating system directories."

iPlanet Directory Server 5.0 includes these key new features:
* Multi-master replication: provides highly-available directory services for always on, 24x7 service levels as well as for increased data integrity. For example, in an instance when a first server goes offline, another is continuously available to store modified data. Then, when the first server comes back online, it automatically receives the modifications made while it was down.

* Simplified Client Access: New "chaining" technology helps simplify client access to directory data that is distributed across multiple databases. Chaining makes it possible to maintain a logical, "virtual" view of the directory tree on a single server while in reality, the directory data may reside on many directory servers.

* Virtually unlimited scalability: New multiple database design allows virtually unlimited horizontal and vertical scalability to support millions of users. In addition, it provides a flexible way of partitioning the directory data to simplify replication. Flexible scalability is a key requirement to enable market and organizational agility.

* Dynamic Class-of-Service Capability: Enhanced user administration through dynamic attributes enables new administrative and policy-setting features such as roles and class of service.
