Complementary medicine continues to become increasingly popular among the general public. As health issues continue to grow, the Western medical world is experiencing a paradigm shift due to a growing sense of personal responsibility toward proactive health management. In Australia, statistics expose a large percentage of individuals who seek alternatives to their everyday lifestyle and health care choices.

"2 in 3 Australians use Complementary Medicine each year. Almost 4 times more spent (in out-of-pocket expenditure) on Complementary Medicines than on pharmaceuticals."National Institute of Complementary Medicine.

However, national and global health organisations such as WHO recognised a deficiency of government support and scientific evaluation; this prevented the ability to measure the safety and effectiveness of complementary medicines in order to safeguard patients from any cautionary issues. The Australian Government and National researchers have since set out to support the development of complementary medicine.

The Clinical Complementary Healthcare Summit will mark the beginning of Australia’s largest gathering of medical professionals who seek to learn the latest scientific discoveries that are vastly evolving the Western medical landscape.

The aim of the Summit is to create a broader holistic vision of the way health care can be provided.

Prof Avni Sali, Director of the National Institute of Integrative Medicine will talk about the latest advances in integrative medicine. His presentation will highlight latest evidence-based research and advances in Integrative Medicine utilising a wide range of treatment options including: mind-body medicine, nutrition, supplements, herbal, environmental medicine and cutting-edge technology. An integrative medicine approach is vital in the prevention and treatment of many illnesses including chronic illnesses such as cancer, MS, dementia, diabetes and heart disease.

There is a growing body of evidence for the role of meditation not only as an intervention for the reduction of stress but as primary preventive strategy for the maintenance of mental health and wellbeing. Dr Ramesh Manocha, Senior Lecturer, Dept of Psychiatry, Sydney University will present a topic on how meditation could overcome mental illness.
