61% of medium and large companies will deploy IP Telephony by 2007, says IDC

In a recent survey, IDC has measured over 300 Australian organisations current and future IP Telephony acquisition behaviours, spending patterns, vendor preferences, decision influencers, loyalty to service providers and satisfaction levels towards IP Telephony.
Based on findings from IDC's study, Australian organisations are seeing long-term value in increasing investments in IP services and infrastructure. Key findings included:
* Operations cost reduction and network availability & performance are, year after year, the biggest pain points for companies interviewed about voice/data networking issues, and operational headaches remain very top of mind.
* One in seven (medium and large) companies (14%) have already deployed IP Telephony, another 47% will be implementing it in the next 3 years, representing almost a $1billion market of entreprise IP Telephony equipment and VoIP services.
* The survey revealed that amongst companies not deploying IP Telephony, it is mainly due to the lack of understanding of the benefits IP Telephony would provide.
* As cost reduction remains the main driver and catalyst for enterprises moving to IP telephony and more players entering the market. IDC expects a steep price decline over the next 12 months and IP handset subsidies to become almost de rigueur.
* Cisco and Telstra have the biggest mindshare when it comes to equipment vendors and solutions providers with 86% and 38% respectively.
"Cisco is bearing the fruits of its early entry in the market and are very well positioned to continue to lead in this market. They are very likely to be on most enterprise IP Telephony shopping lists and remain until the final stage of bids before a decision is made on which vendor to select," said Landry Fevre, IDC Research Director for Telecommunications.
"Overlap and friction between carriers, equipment vendors and system integrators are likely to occur around VoIP as competition intensifies with more players and products entering the market this year," added Mr. Fevre.
