A reliable companion high above the clouds: the S1 Passive headset from Sennheiser

Announcement posted by Sennheiser 01 May 2012

Safe and reliable communication is absolutely essential in the cockpit of a private plane. At AERO 2012 in Friedrichshafen, audio specialist Sennheiser launched the S1 Passive, a high-performance general aviation headset that offers pilots both excellent passive noise attenuation and optimum wearing comfort. With the S1 Passive, Sennheiser is adding a further headset to the S1 family, which celebrated an extremely successful start last year with the S1 Digital.

Whether they are taking a short trip to a nearby island or a longer flight over the mountains – private pilots have to rely unconditionally on radio communication, especially during take-off and landing, which are accompanied by a high level of noise. Following up on the S1 Digital premium headset with fully adaptive noise-cancelling technology, Sennheiser is now launching the S1 Passive, which offers the same excellent passive noise attenuation, proven Sennheiser audio quality and the same high level of wearing comfort as its bigger brother. The full-sized headset was developed for pilots who demand outstanding noise attenuation but do not want to use an active headset. It is also an ideal choice for flight students.

Protection against volume peaks in radio communication“As a reliable and comfortable companion even on the longest flights, the S1 Passive ensures safe and clear speech transmission between the cockpit and the tower, and at the same time has an extremely attractive price/ performance ratio”, explained Jrg Buchberger, Aviation Business Segment Manager. “It can also be perfectly adapted to the user. As a special extra, we have equipped the passive headset with our ActiveGard™ feature, which protects the pilot’s hearing against extreme volume peaks that can occur during radio communication.” If a signal above a level of 110 dB is received, ActiveGard compresses the sound, and everything remains clearly intelligible at a healthy volume.

Superior sound above the cloudsGazing at the world from up in the sky while listening to your favourite music or even chatting on the telephone… The S1 Passive offers Sennheiser’s usual superior level of audio quality for playing music. In addition, the headset can be connected not only to audio devices but also to mobile phones. As soon as the tower contacts the pilot, a ‘mute’ function automatically mutes the music or the phone call.

High-flying designWhen it came to designing this pilot’s headset, Sennheiser took a design and creative consultancy on board and into the cockpit. BMW Group DesignworksUSA has many years of experience in the aviation sector. The result: the most comfortable passive general aviation headset for the world above the clouds. The contact pressure of the S1 Passive can be individually adjusted in three stages, while an innovative glasses zone has softer, more flexible padding to provide space for the temple arms of (sun)glasses. This ensures that pilots can easily find the optimum balance between good noise attenuation and a comfortable fit, enabling them to concentrate entirely on the job of flying the plane.

Guarantee and availabilityThe S1 Passive is part of the S1 family of general aviation headsets, which Sennheiser launched last year with the S1 Digital. Sennheiser offers a five-year guarantee for the S1 Passive, which is made in Germany.
