Governor General’s Medal Winners Selected

A dozen of Canada’s best and most innovative new buildings have earned Canada’s top distinction with the announcement of the 2012 Governor General’s Medals inArchitecture.

Created by the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada, the awards honour architects who further the profession through groundbreaking designs and help position the nation as a leader in the architecture field.

The winners spanned much of the country with sites from Nova Scotia to British Columbia recognized. The medal winning buildings were announced earlier this month.

This year’s winning designs include:

Winnipeg’s Bloc_10, designed by 5468796 Architecture Inc. The condo project, located in the River Heights neighbourhood, boasts staggered floor plates, affording each unit a unique form and various views. Cantilevered projections offer increased floor space on alternating levels, with decks protected from street noise by wooden slats.

Cliff House in Halifax which, true to its name, overhangs a bedrock cliff. The 960-square-foot cabin, designed by MacKay-Lyons Sweetapple Architects, is simplistic and built of light timber, making it both affordable and sustainable. Because of its location, perched atop a cliff, the box-shaped wooden structure offers a stunning view of the sea below....
