Technology And Tourism - A partnership For Regional NSW

Announcement posted by NSW Department of Information Technology and Management 12 Dec 2001

Technology and tourism are teaming up in regional NSW under a new plan to boost visitors to the country and increase skills in computers and technology, the Minister for Information Technology, Kim Yeadon, announced today.

Tourism NSW will use the expanding network of Community Technology Centres to provide access to computers and skills training for regional tourist operators and its own Visitor Information Centre staff, Mr Yeadon said.

In addition, Tourism NSW will use its network to promote the considerable services of the CTCs - CTC@NSW.

CTCs provide services such as the Internet, email, e-business and web site development, video-conferencing, online education and telecommuting.

They also run training courses ranging from advanced software application skills to the basics of surfing the Net and email.

These centres are an important resource for country NSW towns giving them access to technology equal to that available in metropolitan areas.

Tourist operators need quality IT equipment such as scanners, digital cameras, colour printers and data projectors to help promote their businesses. CTCs have the ability to provide these services.

There will be 90 CTCs in NSW within four years and as the network grows, so will the partnership with Tourism NSW.

Tourism Minister Sandra Nori said the partnership with the CTCs would help regional industry operators maximise online opportunities.

The CTC partnership will help ensure regional areas have access to a range of services, which city tourist operators take for granted, such as Internet, digital-imaging, coloured photocopying and video production facilities.

There will also be consultations with our own Visitor Information Centre staff in regional areas to identify their level of IT skills.

For example, staff members will need upgraded technology skills to administer and input information into our new database which contains the most comprehensive listings of NSW tourist services.

The CTCs will provide our staff and regional tourist operators with IT training which will enable them to maximise the marketing potential of tourist services and attractions.
