New IDC report: IBM WebSphere growing fastest

Announcement posted by Websphere 24 Jul 2001

WebSphere closing the gap in worldwide market share
IDC's new report on the application server software market says IBM* WebSphere grew faster than BEA, with IBM continuing to build momentum in the worldwide e-infrastructure software market. The new report, "Application Server Software Platforms Market Forecast and Analysis, 2001-2005" also says that IBM's 1999-2000 growth rate -- 258 per cent -- was twice the industry average.

WebSphere's worldwide market share over the past year climbed to 15.4 percent, closing to less than three percentage points of BEA. The report says that "market dynamics support an increasingly bright future for the WebSphere product family."

Not only did WebSphere's 258 per cent growth rate outperform BEA, but IBM's application server software outpaced that worldwide market by a substantial margin. According to IDC, the worldwide market grew 128 per cent, from $957 million in 1999 to $2.186 billion in 2000.

IDC's report says WebSphere "represents the essence of the e-business platform," augmented by features such as portals, personalisation, edge servers, mobile, content-based routing, authentication, real-time user load balancing, and WebSphere Business Integrator.

"The early days of e-business focused on getting to the Web, and most companies devoted their efforts to creating websites," according to Steve Garone, Program Vice President, IDC. "Today, as companies focus on integrating applications and data both inside and outside the organisation, customers need an e-business platform that encompasses all the functions required to build and deploy e-business applications, using the application
server as the foundation layer. IBM has achieved this and is moving aggressively to supply companies with this full stack of functions."
